Malaysia Airlines 777 missing

To expand on this hypothetical for just a second; if........and I only mean if......this turns out to be something involving the crew; I could see the ramifications here in the USA being extreme. This would be the TSAs excuse and justification for the screening that pilots have been getting. I could see things like CrewPASS and other KCM measures disappearing, as this incident would "prove" that flightcrews need to be screened just like Joe SixPack pax, as well as be treated with a suspicious eye.

I would hope this hypothetical isn't even a possibility.

I hope it's not, too. It's unfortunately rising up far above the rest in probability. That being said, there was a suicide a few months ago with no TSA reaction, so I don't really see crazy reactions here. Besides... muslim! Even if it does turn out that they were involved, we've got that to alleviate the issues here in the states.

Not to mention screening for weapons at a metal detector doesn't prevent a pilot from hijacking their own airplane.

That's what I mean. Extreme measures would need to be "implemented", knee-jerk style, to somehow try and prevent this possibility so the flying public "feels safe".

We saw the same window dressing immediately post-9/11, which set the stage for the scared-of-our-shadow nation we have now for ourselves.

I think it would be more effective to implicate non-airport security measures. Such as further background checks, psych evaluations, outside life and ties. I know airlines mostly do this. But perhaps they need to do more of it.

It goes with the thought of banks not hiring people with bad credit. I guess they figure that people in debt are more likely to steal.

or....an excuse for trying to implement real-time video monitoring of airliner cockpits, or something similar.

As I said, I believe the ramifications to be wide reaching, were this to be the case. Might not succeed, but the door for ideas will have been wedged open if this is proven to be any sort of crew involvement.

I was like 6 years old when the FedEx flight 705 happened. And google doesn't say much about the aftermath....

...so does anyone remember the changes that happened? Were crew members required to pass through security before then? Not that it would matter on a cargo flight I guess.

EgyptAir would be a closer parallel, but that was even considered isolated and an anomaly as it was pre-9/11. After 9/11 and with the creation of the TSA, was when the real knee jerk changes came about, all in the name of "safety and security". Even though it would involve a foreign carrier, it would be a black mark......in the eyes of the TSA.......for all airline pilots to be seen with a suspicious eye.

Even if it did god forbid come to real time video monitoring....how can they monitor all the flights going on at once from the US carriers, let alone the foreign ones coming in. Also, what good is that anyway if there was no ground based override?

Which opens up another can of worms in that what if the guy running the override post decides to run on into a mountain, or take the controls away during an abnormal event and making it worse?

The big change to security at airports was PSA 1771. It didn't effect "working" crews but everybody else had to go through security (in theory) to board a flight.

The Pandora's box potential would likely include things we haven't even thought of yet......

Maybe the feds will recruit retired KGB officials and have them sit in the jumpseat with a 110A badge.

"Papers please, comrade" or if you prefer "Most things in here don't react too well to bullets."

I'm sure the lights are in the Homeland Security building in D.C.! Once they heard the whispers of crew involvement, the wheels started turning!

The longer and longer this goes on, the crazier the possibilities seem to be. My greatest fear is that we will never find out what happened. My heart aches for the family of all those involved, being jerked around by the media saying they've found wreckage, and then a few hours later saying the plane potentially landed on some remote Island.

I'm not a wackjob conspiracy theorist at all....but come on. If I had come on here last month and suggested we could lose a 777 off the face of the Earth for a week, and be no closer to finding it than when it crashed, most people would have called me crazy.

I didn't have time to read through all 84 pages, but did anybody comment on the Uighur terrorist group claiming responsibility? Seems far fetched to me.

AMIRIGHT @milesobrien?

Well, you already tagged Miles so I can't even make the comment about CNN dropping their Science and Technology division years ago.

The lead story about this on CNN right now is "written" by a Pentagon correspondent, a guy with a fair amount of Cold War era international desk experience and a "digital writer" who's last big story was about Bieber. Go figure.
