Malaysia Airlines 777 missing

Agreed, it seems like it would have to be some sort of explosion just to disappear out of nowhere
Lots of possibilities, really, but explosions (fuel tank, or fuel pump), bombings, explosive decompression, structural failure, flight control failure if it's serious enough, rapid decompression coupled with autopilot disengaged, etc. might all result in an aircraft crashing suddenly during cruise and appearing to "disappear out of nowhere." Too early to tell. I can tell you, the process of putting together what happened in an aircraft accident is one of the most difficult puzzles you can engage in, and if the wreckage is in the ocean it's much much worse.

Humans are the worst...

As a dispatcher, there is a pit in my stomach right now. God bless all of those on board, and prayers are with the families.

I feel so bad for these families right now.
As do I. And those at the airport should have been immediately gathered up and escorted away to a private room with security and some employees to be with them. The press needs a swift kick in the nads.

I cannot imagine what happened to this aircraft with no call outs/communications of any sorts. Something obviously horribly catastrophic and quick. I can only hope some physical trace of the aircraft is discovered sooner rather than later, but if indeed she is down in the sea, it won't be fast. This is very sad.

Agreed.

Its also unbelievable that the big 3 news stations can't make the time of day to report on this story. CNN has a replay of a Oscar Pistorius spotlight. MSNBC has a replay of some prison show on...Fox news has a replay of their silly show for earlier this evening.

True that.

And in the ocean, if even at all possible.

I was part of the TWA 800 recovery. We flew nonstop ferrying bodies/body parts, debris and the black boxes to shore, as well as FAA and NTSB investigators back and forth I still get chills thinking about the body bags.

What's there to report? They have no more information. "Plane down, back to you"

Geez, found another shot of the woman who is in most of these press images, but with the caption:
ournalists attempt to interview a woman who is the relative of a passenger on Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, as she crouches on the floor crying, at the Beijing Capital International Airport in Beijing March 8, 2014.

Really? Go die in a fire please. Kthx. I hate the media.

They just had a press conference that they could have translated...
I just watched the press conference on a Vietnamese site. It was very brief and didn't say much or add anything really. They really don't have much at all in the way of info at this point.

This has me all stressed out because one of my biggest fears is something happening over the jungle or the ocean when there's no radar coverage or even contact with other planes and just "poof"

Nature of translant or transpac (or elswhere) ops, unfortunately.

Brings to mind accidents like Flying Tigers 739 in 1962. Poof, indeed.

I think that many long haul pilots have those thoughts from time to time. On a clear night coming in, I used to watch the tiny lights from the fishing boats below in the inky darkness and think how beautiful they were and somehow comforting. Still, it often gives you pause to reflect on all the what ifs. With seasonal wx issues, even more so. The threatening allure.

It is amazing the comfort one has with the sight of just a small light. Now I don't fly over oceans, but lately have been flying to places for the first time and the small farm lights make everything seem ok no matter what.
