Life at Compass

I don't see how there couldn't be a base out there. There will be 50+ flights a day in a few months. Having the nearest reserve crew a 4 hour flight away with flights every 3 hours is not a viable option, and vastly more so when part 117 comes into effect in just 8 weeks (!). You can only find so many crews sitting around a terminal and re-route them as if they are a spare crew, until that strategy eventually becomes inadequate.

Additionally, the shuttle product being discussed here is part of an overall greater strategy on Delta's end -- it is not that the Embraers were put out there because they are temporarily covering for another fleet that's getting mods or something. They were chosen because with the shuttle product, they offer a mainline feel as far as comfort goes, over a CRJ-900 with the valet checking mobscene in the jetway and small first class seats etc. Truly a shame they are not part of mainline; that is another topic of course.

Until Delta either:

1) Throws in the towel on the California shuttle (don't see that happening for a while because they just started it and they appear to be at least committed to trying to win a lot of customers out there, and times are much different than the last LAX push in 2007/2008 with ExpressJet)

or

2) Finds an alternative suitable aircraft for the routes (717 fleet size would need to be almost fully matured to 88 in order to send a group out west, I would think, and I don't see the CRJ-900 doing the flying either, for reasons mentioned above)

...then the flying will continue.

In my mind it is quite a big difference from the seasonal shifting of flights through SLC, SNA, and LGA.

It wouldn't necessarily mean massive shrinkage of one of the other current bases, either -- looking at the overall route structure, one can see that they each serve a legitimate purpose, particularly keeping in mind the fact that the flying will continue to shift around the country in the years going forward, regardless of the west coast presence.

What's the biggest advantage of having a base somewhere? Reserves, how far away are the nearest ones? Like Nick said, 3-4 hours. They need support out there, doesn't matter how nice the trips are, someone calls in sick on one of those nice trips and they're screwed. But I'm sure you know that and I know Amorris does because we've had many A conversation about this.

Hey guys! I'm a new-hire as well. I start class in December :). So with all this talk about the LA base, what would you guys think the chances are of a new-hire going there when the base opens? Any chance for MSP if/when that happens? I'm thinking I'll probably finish up IOE at the end of February meaning March would be my first month on reserve which is about when Phase II starts up.

No argument from me on this.

How cute y'all are having telephone time! :)

Below are some posts from earlier this thread.

That Caly op is going to be a cluster.

For now it seems like it might work. The pairings are set up nicely I think. Time will tell though I guess.

@amorris311 said they would work after I said they are going to be a cluster. His proper response should have been, "Seggy, yes, I think we will need to open a base out there." Homeslice didn't say that to me, hence why I get to bust his chops :).

O ya, They also have announced more flying out there than the original shuttle that was being discussed at the beginning of this thread. Don't see how they can get away with just MSP and DTW, but I don't make the decisions so who knows what will happen.

Congrats, and a warm welcome aboard! Were glad to have you here! We do not currently have a west coast base as of the moment, but there are the many people who speculate that one could open soon. However, with the all the speculation everyone must understand that in order to open a west coast base Delta will need to commit long-term to Compass, at the moment they haven't, and thus why no west coast base. Management won't invest any capital toward a new base without a long-term commitment from Delta as they could shift or ultimately give this flying to someone else. Delta is very unpredictable with there regional partners, and I tend to think management rather be on the conservative side. Hard to tell how junior or senior a west coast domicile would be. I think SLC would go relatively more senior, and LAX or SFO would be relatively more junior. You should be able to get MSP by the time your done with training, you may get awarded DTW in training, but you should have no problem bidding into MSP before you hit the line. Hope this helps, and once again welcome aboard!

Choice three, another airline that has 400+ EM7s on order does it.

(Although I have no idea and I don't have any good rumors, not even from a check airman's cousin's wife to that effect.)

I know they list a degree as "preferred" but is anyone getting a call without it? I applied 2 months ago and still haven't heard anything from them. I have terrible luck.. Perhaps that has something to do with it.

Terrible luck? Or is it that you don't have their preferred minimums with the lack of a degree? If you don't have their preferred mins how is that terrible luck?

Easiest solution here is to get the degree :).

Your (you, juxta) career potential is "regional captain" if you don't have a degree. Get one.

Are you working on one?

Absolutely. I'm well aware it's a requirement at a major airline. I currently don't meet any of the other requirements at majors so the degree isn't holding me back from those jobs, though if I don't get it done within the next 2 years it certainly could.

If any of you reading this know whether or not Compass is hiring without it please shoot me a PM. I'd greatly appreciate it!

I am guessing a couple have been that have good connections but everyone I know personally have them but that's only a couple....
