Lear down in PHL

Welcome to fatal aircraft accident scenes. Sobering as hell, walking amongst that, whether in the moment or in the aftermath.

“I wish my head could forget, what my eyes have seen and my nose has sampled, in 35 years of fire/rescue and investigation"
After the Lear at Gillespie I quit listening to audio and ATC transcripts and try to avoid watching crash videos that are fatal. I just don't need to see and hear such things. Only exception would be if I thought it would be immensely educational or maybe involved a 75 or 76.

I don't like doing it, but I do find accidents interesting and have listened to pretty dramatic ATC audio. Kinda similar to seeing gory photos of accident scenes. The Gillespie audio is heartbreaking.

Not sure we get that ATC audio in this case. There have been pretty gory photos with remains circling the web from this accident and they are gruesome. It really brings home how real an accident is, unfortunately.

Is there an atc for this crash? All I heard was the handoff to departure with no check in. Or is that all there is?

That’s all I’ve found so far. Just PNE Tower and PHL Approach trying to reach them when they went NORDO

While the source may suck, they are accurate in the pictures and videos. They do a nice job of combing all of that and putting it in one article.

Side note: your source sucks.:

I'm biased against crappy, unreliable sources of news.

It is absolutely stupid to use a source that is unreliable and untrustworthy, even if they are correct some times. Using that source requires you to double check that their source is legitimate, which is a complete waste of time. And just because they use a legitimate source for information in their story does not guarantee that they didn't change it, either.

I am not going to waste my time trying to figure out if DM is providing good information or not.

If anyone wants me, or anyone, to click a link in their post, they should use a trustworthy source.

Crap sources like DM will continue to be called out as sucky and unreliable, primarily so that other readers will be aware.

Aeronca thrust reversers on Lears suck, it's a bunch of Rube Goldberg nonsense. I say this as someone who's rebuilt a few of them. But immediately gravitating towards that as the Lear 55's Achilles heel seems silly. The 55 is the red headed step child of the classic Lears. They tested the wing on the 28 and once they figured out it would work they built the 31 (same as a 35 minus the wing tanks, oddly enough I've never seen a 31 with Aeroncas, they always have Dee Howards) and then they decided to go bigger and built the 55. Once they realized they'd built something that was mediocre at best by any scale they went back to scratching their pencils on paper and built the 60. The 55 is the girl at the party that can't dance, the 60 is the girl that will get down regardless of the jam being played. My point is everyone should slow their roll before they start pointing out the thorn in their side that they can remember. I haven't seen a functional Aeronca T/R in over a decade, most have had them deactivated per the STC, but I also don't normally frequent the bottom feeders these days.
