JC’s Resident Curmudgeon
Whataburger has fallen off hard since COVID.
Many places have. Lots of outfits ran on intangibles that individuals brought to the mix, and when long time employees departed the fix, they took a lot of knowledge, some of it critical, with them.
I was trying to get some work done at the house by what was a long time respectable firm. I made the required deposit, and waited. After giving some COVID buffer time, I started calling, and it was near impossible to get an answer from the front or even 2nd line staff. Rather than waiting around to see how it ended, I skipped "Go" and had my attorney send a demand letter right up front.
Owner of the business cut a check to me the day after they got the letter for the deposit and attorney's fees, without even a fuss. Even my attorney was "I've never seen anything like that. They just paid it."
Turns out that some lower level, but still key people split, and didn't bother to hand off any of the processes or even passwords to some of the systems, and most of the business was locked up solid. Despite what I had to go through, which admittedly was minor, I felt bad, in a way, because it wasn't going to be easy for them to recover.
