In my quest to visit the most famous natural history museums in the country, I’d been keeping my eyes peeled for Pittsburgh layovers. I had a hole in my schedule and a PIT long layover that fit all my wants popped up in the middle of that hole, so I grabbed it. Started early with a quick coffee and breakfast.

Then to a frisbee golf course in a city park. Officially checked PA off my list of states played. Hardly another soul in the park and definitely no other golfers. Finished my round, then about a 30 minute walk through the park to the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History.

The natural history side has some very famous and very important fossil specimens, including the holotype of Tyrannosaurus Rex. The displays are more modern and generally nicer than the AMNH in NYC that I’ve been to a lot. Some of the artwork is a tad dated and I wish the displays were, like the newest ones tend to be, more clear about what is actual bone and what’s reconstructed.

The OG found by Barnum Brown in 1903. Still not as spectacular as the Chicago Field Museum’s Sue, but special as the first real find.
Then back to the hotel for a quick nap so I could stay awake for 5:45 of battling 100+ knot headwinds back to the mothership.
If you’ve never been and you get a PIT layover I can’t recommend it enough, fantastic pair of museums and at only $25 total for adult admission to both sides of the museum it’s an absolute steal compared to places like the AMNH or the Field. Also a cheap and easy bus ride from downtown. If I had regular layovers here I’d definitely buy a membership.
