Layover adventures

No no, that's a TATA, an Indian firm. Tatra is a Czech manufacturer who made unique looking automobiles (largely for Politburo officials) and trucks until the 90's, now they just make trucks. The Lane museum has at least 6 of them on display. It's why its one of my favorites, lots of unique automobiles of all nationalities.

Buffalo Naval Park

It's a pretty interesting way to kill a few hours, and on a Monday, I had the place nearly to myself. I didn't take a lot of pictures. The destroyer - The USS The Sullivans, was all right. The cruiser - USS Little Rock - was a little more interesting. The whole system they used to manage, assemble and guide the missiles on the track through the blast doors to the launcher on the fantail was pretty damned interesting/cool. The sub - USS Croaker, firmly reinforced my belief that I could never serve on a sub.

Tickets are $23 - it's an easy walk from downtown BUF or a cheap Uber. The docents are pretty knowledgeable. Worth the trip.

Can we use this thread to ask for advice?

I've got 30 hours coming up in SYR on Friday. While a member here suggested "coeds" to me, that's likely not in the cards, so - what should one do with 30 hours to kill in SYR, most of which will be on this coming Friday?

funk n waffles used to be pretty good. I think there’s some sort of concert venue near there but I may be conflating it with another layover. the watering hole I frequented in the rj era closed during covid. never made it to the science and technology museum but the erie canal museum is kind of interesting. there’s a lot of great art deco and early 20th century architecture downtown in you’re into that sort of thing. there’s an office building with a bank in it that is absolutely amazing. had a decent little diner on the ground floor as well
clinton square had a great old ice rink they used to flood when winter still existed

My default is always somewhere one of my museum memberships gets me in, looks like the museum of science and tech would be it there. Unfortunately looks kinda more kid-oriented.

which museum membership gets you into others? might find something like this useful in the not too distant future

Probably the best for piloty types is an ASTC membership because that’s all about science and tech museums. I got mine at the Field Museum in Chicago. I also have a dual NARM/ROAM membership through the Burke museum in Seattle. And the AMNH in NYC, but that one has no reciprocity and I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t have a long EWR layover every single month.

Most museum memberships pay off after 3-4 visits, which is pretty easy for us pilots to get especially on the reciprocal ones. I’ve probably used my Field membership as much at the San Diego natural history museum as the at the Field. 10/10 would recommend buying one or more. At my regular haunts I’ve seen the highlights so I just like to camp out with a sketchbook and attempt art as a way of spitting in the face of AI. Oh, and they usually get you ≈10% off at the home museum gift shop so you can decorate your iPad case, water bottle, and luggageworks kick plate with stickers that aren’t BRCC and union stuff.

If we ever coordinate long EWR layovers I’ll get you into the AMNH and go all ASD hyper fixation/special interest on the fossil hall

SYR overnight expert and also went to school there.
Funk n’ Waffles is meh.
That science museum is catered towards kids,
-If you are into baseball or looking for something outdoor, the Mets minor league team is there. Not sure if they are playing that weekend. Cheap price.
-Right near there is the CNY regional market. Lots of vendors and foodstuff. Might close early afternoon.
-For breakfast, Rise n Shine(you will not lose).
-Around the corner is one of those axe throwing places(My whole crew did that a while back and it was fun).
-Clinton square has a few things around.
-If you want to bet your mortgage or kids college fund, Turning Stone Casino is about an hour away.
-The campus is about a 20 minute walk, and has some cool restaurants around.
-There are the cliche places like Destiny mall(which has some entertainment options in there).

ASTC is a great program and part of EAA membership.

More often than not I find the person working the museum box office is unfamiliar with the program and just gives you a ticket rather than looking it up. Works for me, but I always wonder if that impacts the statistics on museum attendance and ASTC utilization.

I found Little Rock a fascinating historical relic. it was a post-WWII conversion from a 6-in gun ship into a missile cruiser, they lopped off the entire superstructure and put the entire missile magazine above the main deck.

i was in staring in disbelief walking around the missile mag, looking at the assembly line a missile had to go thru to go from missile storage at the forward end of the superstructure and building up the warhead, rocket motor, fins, guidance package before it was stored in a ready service locker as an All-Up-Round ready to shoot before it gets pooped out the back end onto the missile rail... it would be hard pressed to defend against a soviet saturation missile attack...

new purpose-built missile ships built in the 1960-70's, put their missile magazine as almost complete rounds inside the ship's hull, and only had to attach the fins after the missile was brought up onto the missile rail.. and attach the telemetry cable...

And today (okay - well 20 years ago), each missile round comes in its own hermetically sealed container so its protected from the weather and all of the wires are plugged into so you can upload mission telemetry directly into the missile vs the unreliable launcher rail where sometimes the gunner's mate had to go out to the missile and unplug and reseat the telemetry connection between the missile and the launcher rail.. and you can ripple fire 1 missile every 2 seconds out of the vertical launch box. but reloading after going winchester is a pain.

i discovered being a submarine wasn't for me when i was on midshipman cruise and dancing with the one-eyed lady was a poor way of watching sunrise thru a periscope.

If you have MCI (Kansas City) overnight, the World War One museum is fascinating and very well done. And it showed how much we didn't learn from history so we could bring on WWII nearly a generation later and soon to be coming WWIII.

As it turned out they pulled us from the overnight due to legality (why they didn’t DH us to SYR instead remains a mystery) so we ended up in NYC for 40 hours instead. I did walk past the Mother Ship last night.

Mets game tonight I think.
