Layover adventures

Theyve started some limited service to SWF now. Apparently the runway was lengthened just enough to get A320NEOs in there now from the US. I am very tempted.

They lengthened the runway over there about 10 years ago and have been flying 320ceo and 320neo aircraft in and out for a while, although it's a pretty sporty landing. The SWF service was just for a few weeks over the summer. Hopefully they add in more service next year. Easiest way to get there otherwise is through CPH with 2 flights on most days. If you go, let me know and I can give you any info you need.

Hanoi Hilton was interesting to check out on my layover

You find the rest of our guys? I believe well over 1000 never made the "Hilton" guest list, and were known survivors at least initially. Some could be attributed to the Laotian, Cambodian, or just even the rural farmer's penchant for immediate execution. But others traveled. CIA knows it. Some probably to the USSR. What a disaster. To your post though, it would be a very interesting place to visit, in a really somber way.

Hey they filled in around the utility access that I wiped out on with the crashpad bike. (Right next to meta reality labs)

Whoa, I was just in HNL too.....you guys ditched me :)

I ended up going far far away from Waikiki with a HAL dude I know though. We had a good chat about this JCBA on the H3 heading up to K-bay, and later to dinner with his fam. We have a whole chat for AS and HAL guys that used to fly navy

So the pictures are out of order, but what we did was…

Day 1: ferry to Angel Island. For those not familiar it was like the Ellis island of San Francisco which meant many Chinese immigrants came through there. Not exactly a nice place. Mrs Roger is part Chinese on her dads side and though she has family history in SFO I think we determined that her direct ancestors came by way of Olympia and LA before they got to SF. Still pretty impactful especially reading about the things people did to get here and the way they were treated and seeing that nothing has changed in 100 years. Also had great views of the Golden Gate and Alcatraz on the ferry. Then In n Out for dinner, because California.

Day 2: California Academy of Science in Golden Gate Park. Kids saw penguin feeding, planetarium show, scuba divers in the aquarium, and almost the whole museum. 28 bus back to fisherman’s wharf where we stayed stops at the Golden Gate Bridge so of course we had to hop off for some photo ops but the kids were museum’d out. Then back to the hotel for a short break and out again for dim sum in Chinatown.

Day 3: rode the cable car all the way to the end and back. Then over to east bay to visit my FIL’s cousin (on the Chinese side) who lives over there. Ate sushi then Mrs caught up on family lore and I took the littles trick or treating in the neighborhood. Then back for pizza delivery and packing up.

Had a great time, rumors of a mad max hellscape are greatly exaggerated at least where we were. Will definitely be back to do more of the things.

20 hour chicago layover literally blocks from the field museum, where I fell back in love with dinosaurs and paleo. I’m not exaggerating when I say that the Sue exhibit is like sacred ground.

I had a 30 hour EWR layover. Rapidly turning into one of my favorites for the easy access to Manhattan via ferry or bus. Came in on a redeye and by the time I was up and moving the best option was the metropolitan museum of art because it was open until 2100. I only made it through mayyybe 20% of the museum in 4+hours.

I was going to take it easy the next morning before my afternoon departure but then I saw online that literally that day the AMNH was opening their new stegosaurus fossil, nicknamed Apex, so I made a quick trip back over to check it out.

@Roger Roger yeah I also like the EWR long overnights. Good location for hotel, and if you're beat, easy walk over into Hoboken for good foods. Nice running path along the river too. I had one earlier this month that I had to give away to go do military flying. Hopefully someone enjoyed it.

Make sure you cat-call @NovemberEcho. If you hear someone who weirdly sounds slightly southern on the radio it’s probably him.
I always forget to check if he’s working. I’ve got an old college buddy who works one of the arrival corridors into SEA and he keeps hooking me up with directs and best forward speeds!
