KCM versus Pilot versus "himself" versus them... or the system? WTF?

This guy acted like a • and got what I would like expect to be a normal result for such behavior. I have however had my fair share of ridiculous encounters with TSA personnel whom were less than average in their application of their own rules. If KCM has to go the TSA should also get completely revamped as they don’t applies the rules consistently across the nation. If they tell me to leave my electronic items in the bag they shouldn’t have to remove them every time unless there is an issue beyond “they are dense materials.”

My favorite is when I get the random from KCM then, in uniform, go to the Pre-Check line and there’s one guy who will stop what he’s doing, try to call the KCM checkpoint to verify that I’m supposed to be in the pre-check line and continues to screeen passengers. Then the KCM checkpoint will call him back and ask “Why are you asking?” They have an exchange without a definitive answer and I ask “What would you like me to do?” “Oh I need to call a supervisor” who asks “why did you call me over, let the pilot though”.

PHX.

I've had, actually, very good luck in PHX. Probably total random sample size. But I had a triple overnight there a couple months ago, and had a 100% pass rate. Now I will be thrown in prison next time because I said that. And have to greyhound home. I remember we once had an intel officer who F'd up bigger than • on a detachment, and our skipper told him that he gets to wear khakis (the formal uniform) rather than a flight suit for the rest of our det, that the opso would give him a uniform inspection at 0600 every morning, and that he would ride the greyhound back to VA at the end. Knowing said skipper much better now, he was totally F'ing with him, but it was awesome in a "you're way more of a noob in the navy than you think you are" way at the time. None of which is either here nor there. You're probably reading this in the recheck line

Yeah, I wanna hear this one.

The smurf running the scanner swiped my FAs iPod (yes it was that long ago) from the bin as it went through. Claimed it was never there to begin with when she couldn't find it on the other end. The supervisor backed up the screener. I watched her put it in the bin. Brought the LEO standing by the exit in to the conversation and asked the tsa supervisor to review security camera footage. He told me there wasn't any that showed that angle. The cop apparently knew that there was (you could see the camera globe in the ceiling) and the fact that he was lying ticked him off and put him on our side of things and demanded to see it.

TSA supervisor said he'd review it at the end of his shift. I said we weren't leaving until it was reviewed and had the FO go get the station manager (who didn't want a delay). Cop said he wanted to see it now as well. TSA manager got involved. Agreed to review the tape. Cop insisted on watching. I insisted on watching. Big kerfuffle ensued because the tape was apparently security sensitive.

Station manager threatens to call the airport security director (it was a holiday) and the TSA manager agrees to let me watch it with them. The video is very high quality for an early 2000s security camera and very clearly shows the screener grabbing the ipod out of the bin and putting it in his pocket. Cop goes back out to grab the Smurf but they are gone. Nobody knows where they are. The FA fills out the paperwork to press charges for theft.

She never got her ipod back but I think the TSA paid her out for it. No idea what happened as far as the criminal complaint went.

White Plains was nuts back then.

Damn. I stand corrected. I Still won’t escalate with TSA though…

I did once and it worked.

Came through EWR security one morning. ID was on a lanyard. ID flipped around and as I'm coming through the metal detector, the Smurf reaches out and grabs my ID and my tie in one fist-full as I'm walking. I stopped dead in my tracks and said, "You don't touch me!" He replied, "I can do whatever I want!" Without my prompting, a "supervisor" (I dunno, he had more stripes than the rest) comes running over, flailing his arms yelling, "NO YOU CAN'T!! NO YOU CAN'T!!"

Needless to say, I got the manager involved (I specifically asked for the one in the suit and tie) and told him what happened that I was about to call Port Authority Police to press assault charges (I wasn't but they didn't know that). He was very apologetic and I never saw the offending Smurf again.

I asked for a manager once. I was on a six day trip, coming in from CDG to go DH back home.

Full uniform.

The screener said, loudly, “WOW, this pilot has SIX BOTTLES OF WINE IN HIS BAG!!” In front of a crowd of passengers.

Oh you KNOW I went full “Kyle”, demanded a supervisor and waiting as she was reprimanded and apologized.

And coming full circle with DRM and everything as a service an iPod full of plain ol MP3s is once again a gold mine!
I find it really interesting that some of what I was worried about as a Linux-using hippie in my college computer science days (note: Linux still occupies several important roles in my ecosystem here) has more or less come to pass, with a side of totalitarianism largely in the name of information security.

And yes, I use Apple products still.

I tried, very clumsily, to talk about the bro-ification of Silicon Valley with someone a few weeks ago.
