Kalitta 727 FO

I think our books have electronic stamps on every page

We don't have electronic books. Must be a 121 thing, no stamp required in a book carried by the pilots.

At my old job revisions came out much more sparingly, I wonder how muc our FSDO actually looks at our stuff.

Rest is only required under 121 Subpart S (Supplemental rules) after flight duty. There is no requirement for "look-back" like there is in 135 and 121 Domestic rules. 24/7 reserve is unfortunately totally legitimate, and widely practiced.

Exactly, and the 30 hours in 7 day limit doesn't exist either for 121 Subpart S. We get to go and go and go. The only thing that limits us is the 12 in 24 and 1000 hours in the rolling year.

Yeah, I love how the domestic bubbas who fly during the daytime on regularly scheduled flights need more rest than the non-sked guy departing Kuwait at 10pm for a 16 hour duty "day." One level of safety my ass!

I so agree. We are somehow super human. It is really simple though...We haul boxes and boxes have no lobbyists to keep them safe like the general public does... ;)

Unfortunately, I don't fly boxes...I fly troops, and they deserve a hell of a lot better than that.

Not arguing that, i was referring to 135 rules. You supplemental guys have it rough.

Also 18 hours rest if you fly 20 in 48 or 24 in 72. Frequent naps throughout the day and avoiding chopping copious amounts of wood while on the callout leash is sage advice.

Jumping back to the orig. post... if you have the time, I would apply to this job. I worked at USA Jet, (DC-9's instead of 727's) and the experience was great! Plus, it put my resume in a 'different stack' when it was time to move on to bigger and better things. Yes, the schedules are challenging to say the least. Mexico in the middle of the night left much to be desired. But, I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.

I only drove the -9, but all of the United guys that I've talked to on various commutes talk about their days in the 72 with much fondness.

Plus, it made me a much better pilot because of the experience. I don't know about much Kalitta II/Charters, we only had one guy who was a Falcon driver in my crashpad that worked there... he liked it. Hard schedule. I ran into a ex-Mesa guy I kinda knew from ORD who was on the 72 for Kalitta in Saltillo once... he LOVED driving the 727.

So, take it with a grain of salt... I enjoyed my time as a 'freight dog'... learned a lot... worked hard... and I'm glad I was able to have done my time. And if you do apply and get the gig, I know of a decent crashpad in YIP.

Friend of mine just got out of sitting sideways on the 72. Everyone I have talked to loves the plane. I got my name in the hat but probably with 300 other guys.

Agreed.. Give them the best you can. It makes me sick how this gov't treats our vets when they get back. They deserve a hell of a lot more support than they get for the job they do. But that is a topic for another thread.

Has anyone heard back yet for this position? Does Kalitta usually send out a no thanks email or is it nothing at all if you don't get the job?

I hope these kind of opportunities are still around when I have the time a few years down the road, I'd love to spend a few years in the 727.

I looked at APC and wondering if this FO position really only makes 45 K a year?!?!? I make more than this CFI'ing.

The bad part is, is that I want to apply.... SJS at work. I was just hoping it was more than 45 :)

Really?! Your hoping for more than 45K/year?! I'm amazed. I think that 45K/year is an absolutely outstanding starting pay considering that you spend 187 days/year away from your family. If you want more pay...move to China. And if you think that a cargo 727 is shiny...you have never flown cargo, no disrespect to bandit. Look at what AAL or even Delta pay 1 year FOs then say 45 isn't enough. Hell, the last time I looked at FedEx the starting pay for a FO was around 33K, just looked, it's actually 45k/year as well. Some things still amaze me. Like individuals saying that you have to send them to a specific base or airframe just because the have more than the minimum hours required.

Be happy that you have a job. There may be a pilot shortage in a few years, but unless you want to collect unemployment until then, be happy that you have a job period.
