JetBlue worries about losing pilots

I still think it's funny that I've got 1000+ hours of heavy jet time, however many ocean crossings, plenty of international experience, etc., but RJ CAs are more qualified than I am to go fly my equipment at a Legacy due to my lack of TPIC.

HR makes these minimums, not pilots...

Because of the incredible retirement rate for the next 20 years, furloughs of any significant number and duration similar to what was seen after 9/11 would be very unlikely.

Hang on a couple years when the economy tanks and watch what happens.

Come back when you've got more than "light twin" time.

Kids....

Im assuming everyone is applying anyways whether they feel they have the competitive times or not, right? Just because a check-airmen at your company cant get a call doesn't mean that you shouldn't try.

I think everyone is applying everywhere. But it's just funny that a few years ago if you have LCA next to your name your considered a commodity. Now a days it seems some airlines few experienced captains as "untrainable" and don't bother.

And getting back on track.....

We may have a problem attracting a certain level of pilots. When everyone else with better pay and benefits starts hiring, we may wind up with the "bumps on a log" FOs. Yes, I flew with plenty. Not sayin that TPIC time is everything, but being an FO you are shielded from a lot of the BS CAs have to deal with. I'm glad I got that experience in the left seat dealing with all of that since I actually still get it as an FO now when the skipper isn't around because they'll LET us deal with it. Pinnacle pretty much said FOs can't do anything. Any other 9E guys remember the hell storm that came down when someone heard FOs we're writing things up in the logbook? The horror!

We're losing quite a few guys to recall at Delta. A few are A320 check airman. Losing an FO is one thing, but losing a CA on the senior plane tends to eat training costs since it triggers multiple training events as opposed to just one.

Still have a decent chunk of guys with recall to AMR, a couple that still (amazingly) have recall at Airways and a lot of FOs and junior CAs looking at other places. All this in addition to growth plans.

I have to add a few more things.

We need to remember that the 1000 TPIC was a VERY recent phenomenon that (I think) only SWA, FEDEX, and UPS required before 9/11. After 9/11 AirTran was added to that list, but they only wanted 500 TPIC. Bottom line, it is a very small amount that actually required the 1000 TPIC to apply before 9/11. That number is still relatively small today.

I think the traditional legacies know they can take an experienced FO and mold them to be the Captain they want them to be. These places (and the Spirit/JetBlue/Virgin America types) want to hire the person which is, in my opinion, a much better hiring practice than having a black and white line based on numbers in a logbook.

I was one of the few regional pilots with ANY turbine pic in my ground school

Not saying it was right or wrong, I applied, they hired me, it is what it is.

You'll be amused to know that for every training course we go through that requires a PIC type, they always ask "Does anyone need their ATP?" As we have a lot of guys, usually from the military, that don't have ATPs

If they like you and you meet the mins, you've got a job. If they don't like you, all of the numbers in the world don't matter.

There are people who think "who you know" and "if they like you" shouldn't be a factor. Those people need to sit up and look around. That's how the world works. Everywhere.
