They may realize it's cheaper to play with the regionals than to own their own aircraft.
If that were the case wouldn't you think the company would've ordered 145's instead of 190's or Airbi? Or created a "holding company" and then outsourced ALL of the flying to regionals?
50 seat jets just aren't cost effective. They were a replacement for the turboprop back when gas was $0.25/gal, not $2.00+. Back then fuel burn really wasn't much of an issue.
