Jeju Air 737-800 gear up landing slams into wall

On the NG the thrust reversers will open with either radar altimeter senses less than 10 feet altitude or when the air/ground safety sensor is in ground mode.

At usual landing speeds touching down, you can slide quite the distance with gear up surprisingly. The B-1B accident at Diego that I was the lead accident investigator on, that thing slid nearly 7700 feet on its nose and engine nacelles before coming to a stop.

Ok well TIL.

So now I’m confused. They had hydraulics?

This sounds like a captain rushing to get a plane on the ground and a FO who wasn’t allowed to speak up, which is the culture there. Guess we’ll see.

I dont know how accurate FR24 is but if they hit birds yeeted the rest of the approach, maybe not the best choice?

It’s not. They went around on 1 after the bird strike and/or compressor stall and it looks like FR stopped recording. They then did a teardrop 180 back to 19 opposite direction. Maybe they secured the wrong motor and it turned into a glider when they were still clean. I just really don’t see this being mechanical unfortunately.

Reading reports that it was over the threshold at 225mph so take that with a grain. This is a sad tragedy for sure. I also read that this airplane diverted to Seoul due to hydraulic issues the previous day.

Must have been some of those Russian birds driving around in Pantsirs.

Interesting side fact; I’ve never bothered to learn the Warsaw Pact names for their various weapons systems. Have only ever known the NATO designations for them. Mil-wise, we don’t use the WP designations for them, as all of our class and unclass pubs reference the NATO codes.

Just judging from the video—yea hard to tell—but it looks like they were going super fast… Are there flaps out or were they clean?? Horrific 😬

Well that’s certainly got to be in the running for most insane crash footage ever recorded…Accident aside, what’s the deal with that clip? Just normal spotters who happened to be there?

Yeah, I mean obviously the people are still being accounted for, but when I saw that fireball, I just assumed everyone was dead......after what appeared to be a fairly benign gear up landing

It's hard to tell, but are both reversers deployed in the crash video that's been circulating? To me, it looks as if the #1 is still stowed.

I was in Diego not long after that. Saw the engines. Looked like they had been run over a cheese grater. Airplane was in the hangar being repaired.
