Jeju Air 737-800 gear up landing slams into wall

Wow. That’s nice to see.

The US would be in a much better place if there was some criminal prosecution of bad actors/conspiracy theorists that defame victims of tragedies like Sandy Hook and even our own recent crashes.

Not so much. Free speech matters and libel and slander suits are the best remedy. I don’t think our problems are best solved by thought police.

South Korea also has used these laws to intimidate whistle-blowers exposing government corruption.

It’s remarkably easy to filter 98% of the crap - avoid most social media and the worst news sources.

Every morning, I listen to the news from NPR, BBC, and CBC. I read my small local paper and the WSJ. Other than coverage of crap, I don’t see much crap.

Oh, birds aren’t real.

Laugh reacc for the last line. Otherwise agreed.

Sandy hook families disagree. Those people were harassed nearly to death, at the worst possible moment of their lives.

People like you have a poor of the First Amendment. It doesn’t allow you to say what whatever you want. It just allows you freedom from persecution from the government for political speech.

Alex Jones should have been charged and sentenced to a significant sentence for what he did to Sandy Hook families.

I made no reference to the First Amendment. You might be unaware of half a million cases that have addressed the issue of public and private expression, not involving the government. It looks like you should keep that arrow in your quiver until warranted.

I’m sympathetic to the families of the victims of Sandy Hook. If they were offended by what they read and saw on the Internet, the government offers few remedies in the absence of threats of violence or extortion.

In most cases, they were offended by the sites they chose to visit. We can’t protect all the dumb folks from their choices.

Until the lawsuits, covered by legit news outlets, had little idea who Alex Jones was. I new he was an Internet loudmouth but had never viewed more than ten seconds of his broadcasts before scrolling.

No. People were receiving hate mail, death threats, people confronting them in person, coming to their workplaces, homes, cemeteries. It was far, far beyond "sites they chose to visit".

Don’t open email from strangers, prosecute cases of trespass and disturbances of the peace.

What additions to the criminal code do you suggest?

If you’re kinda lazy, you might have missed the hundreds of arrests and dozens of successful civil suits related to Sandy Hook.

In the case of Sandy Hook, the law worked.

Yeah, if my kid died in a mass school shooting and then someone came face to face with me and started threatening me, I would God Bless America’d them so fast.

Interesting story on the online abuse family members of crash victims have faced.

Jeju Air: Families attacked online after South Korea plane crash
Before I spent time in Asia, I loved Koreans. EVERYWHERE I went, I saw Korean (female mostly) tourists treating people like crap and causing Karen scenes. There are Korean restaurants on the beaches of Bohol because they view Filipino food as some slang term for dog food and most refuse to eat it, and ignore everyone who isn't Korean (as deliberately as possible). In airports I saw melt screaming melt downs a few times and in restaurants I saw wait staff treated like garbage in Guam, Tokyo and the PI. Even the little food court in Palau just transiting for less than an hour, some Korean woman was pissed off about her ice cream being too warm and called the woman a theif.

Considering I didn't go to Korea but came back with a bunch of stories of messed up crap Korean tourists did (and the fact Jeju Air flew the plane my friend flew home on into a wall a few weeks later), my interest to go to Korea for anything other than airplanes and food is eradicated and I now think they must have a super toxic culture. I'm now suspicious of how well behaved they act in San Francisco...
