JC Cyclists.

roundout
I'm all over the spectrum as far as riding goes. I have 3 triathalons this summer, so I would like something other than my mt. bike. I would like to get into competitive riding, but I also enjoy the 20-50 mile joy rides. I don't necessarily have a budget, however, I'm not going to purchase a bike that is equivalent to the cost of a small car.

Hopefully I'll be in the market for a new mountainbike. Maybe used, I don't know. I have an old 90's Specialized FSR and a 90's Trek 6000 hard tail that I'm consigning and then using the proceeds to go towards something modern.

Erik10 Something to think about and something I wish I did was build a bike. There are a lot of people that must have the newest stuff. You can get used parts dirt cheap. Knowing what I now know I could have built a killer bike for less then $2,500. I am talking Dura Ace/Red/Campagnolo killer.

That is the other option. I have all the time in the world, so finding something to occupy my time would be a double bonus. Are there specific websites you frequent to find decent used parts?

Are there any significant advantages to a carbon fiber frame v. aluminum frame / carbon fork? (road bike)

After reading this review: ( http://www.livestrong.com/article/212599-carbon-fiber-vs-aluminum-bike-frames/ ), I'm not sure there are any advantages. I was set on a carbon frame, but now I'm having second thoughts.

What are your thoughts, jtrain609 Pilotforhire587 bike21 BEEF SUPREME

Well I have a titanium roadie...

Because carbon and aluminum are not comfy IMHO.

Steel Surly is a great first road bike.

I guess my advice remains the same buy a nice but budget minded first bike that fits really well and is comfy.

Once you wear it out spend some big bucks.

I agree with all of the comments on going for fit and feel before anything else. I ended up with carbon because one particular bike felt really good compared to anything else I test rode. I also have a much heavier aluminum cyclocross bike (24lbs), and I can often smoke dudes on 16lb road bikes simply because they are far too unfit to benefit from a super light bike.

I have to laugh at the guys that blow wads of cash to get the newest and lightest, meaning they shave a pound off with the new bike, when they need to lose 20+ lbs themselves and that would be free. I get it when someone is already super fit and trying to compete, but for the average chunky weekend warrior... come now.

Erik10 Late to the party here, but I dig my carbon frame nowadays. I used to always ride steel or aluminum roadies (more of a crit racer back in the day) but love the ride of carbon now. Sounds like you have the time to build something up, I'd take that route. With 11 speed components coming out, you can probably pick up a nice used 10sp group on the cheap that some racer used for a season.

Keep an eye out on eBay or Craigslist and you'll probably find deals. Although I try to support my LBS as much as possible, online retailers such as Price Point, Jenson and Cambria often have pretty huge sales that you can pick some good deals. Also, The Clymb has good deals on occasion for parts but you need an invite. PM if you need one.

Thanks for all the replies, guys! To keep everyone up to date, I purchased an aluminum frame bike for myself and my wife. They should arrive this coming week.

On a site note, is anyone thinking of doing a 1/2 Ironman anytime soon? We signed up for a few triathlons to get the feel of things, but my ultimate goal is to complete an Ironman.

All packed up for our vacation to Napa. Going to be some fantastic riding happening :) Praying that the Thule 699 case keeps my baby protected on the SWA flight.

Pope valley road FTW throw in a little Ink Grade!

Yep... on the way over, I'll be using the inflight Wifi and mapping out some of the segments on Strava. Can't wait! We did this two years ago in Calistoga, further north of Napa. It was great. Used a rented bike there. Nice ride, but I do just love my CR1, so it's coming with me this time.
