Instructor Layoffs

That blows.

What % were laid off?

Sundays gone, now layoffs. Any rumors about what other cost cutting measures are being considered?

1. No one is allowed to work Over Time
2. trying to save money by shutting off computer monitors and lights, but leave the computers running.......?? Need to shut these down as well.
3. No printer paper available
4. Academy shut down @ 6pm on Wednesdays and all day Sunday

These are just the ones I can remember........

The only funny thing is.........is what do you tell a customer that just spent 60-70K for his training. Sorry you cant have printer paper, but the contract students can. Sorry, I can't brief longer today because it will put me Over Time this week.

Sucks but what can you do........

Damn, I wish they weren't allowed to work overtime while I was there. My instructor made sure he was never an "under producing" instructor as far as briefing time was concerned. He'd make crap up just to be able to put "1.3" instead of "1.0" hours.

Pffft yeah I saw this coming a mile away.. no paper.. lights off.. 7 instructors gone...paying for the laundry facility and internet when it was included in your ridiculously high on-campus rent. I'm glad I got out when I did. I really feel bad for the new non-contract students that have to pay that much and are getting very little services that FS promised. NEW STUDENTS BE AWARE OF SLICK MARKETING.

Cheers:beer:

The paper thing doesnt really matter, you dont need to print out 10 chards and 15 pages of a weather report for each student doing a flight. loook at your weather write down some stuff if you need to and go or down. the weather you print out wont change on the paper while you are flying.

I dont know what lights off means, dont waste power? pretty comman for anyone not to want to waste power.

Look at the economy of course people got laid off.

Laundry... yeah that sucks same with internet, new guys got screwed as well as people still living there on old contracts. dorms are expensive if you dont like it move soemwhere nicer and cheaper.

Like any school, living in dorms just plain sucks. There are other options out there. Here's a thought: Print weather from your own computer! And for goodness sake, have it and your performance ready before the lesson is supposed to start.

This is true. The students need to be taught how to complete a pre-flight wx briefing without the use of paper. This is the instructors fault if they are showing up with 10-15 pages each time they fly.

But what I'm getting at is that students / IP's need at least printed NOTAMs in cause of numerous diversions (IFR / VFR) throughout the day because of thunderstorms. Having these 2-3 pages on hand (in the aircraft) is never a bad idea. This will save you and the students precious time because you will not have to talk with the FSS for 15min getting the information over the radio.

My point is that taking ALL the paper and printer out of the wx room is a bit extreme.......if in the end it doesn't save instructor jobs.

My 2 cents :dunno:

brief for beer. simple. no need for excessive briefs anyways...

Most instructors at larger schools tell you to print it all off in case of a ramp check and don't provide much of an alternative, implying you're screwed unless you did. (I know there are alternatives, but that was the common thought when I was there as well as at other schools). Otherwise, yea; scribble some crap down and move on.

Also while there, the instructors generally don't show the SPs how to do a simple weight and balance with a generic weight or last aircraft flown's weight, and subsequently do the simple math when you get the can for the bird you'll be flying that day (45 minutes late). They're SPs, they're not going to figure it out on their own most of the time.

Beyond that, yea, students show up late, hung over, stupid, etc all the time. So can instructors. Human nature.

It's like George Carlin said: “Think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize half of them are stupider than that.”

I don't like stupid people, so I quit my job and now work from home. Problem solved.

They are layoffs, so when business is back, I'm sure they'll call some back. I think the requirement however is they must have a CFII to return.

That would be good. When bLiz and I were hired, it was a requirement. Single engine standardization covered VFR, IFR and the Arrow. There will be much better IP utilization this way.
