Here's a general word of advice about buddy passes, and this is NOT necessarily aimed at the OP, (who comes from an airline family and knows & understands what a buddy pass is):
-A buddy pass rider needs to leave ALL sense of entitlement at home. An attitude will NOT get them anything. Period. Asking nicely for something is one thing, but getting pissy in ANY way about ANYTHING towards an employee is a serious no-no.
-Please, if you give a buddy pass to someone, make sure they understand exactly what they're getting in to. Make sure they understand the concept of "space available", and that they may very well not get on a flight. Make sure they understand all dress code requirements, behavior requirements, and even if they're already on the plane, seated with their bags put away, if the agent comes down and takes them off the plane, get off quickly & quietly and do NOT make a fuss.
-Make sure you spell out what the consequences are for bad behavior/attitude during their buddy pass travels. Show them in your employee handbook where it says (and I guarantee that it does say) that YOU, the EMPLOYEE, can and will be held accountable for their behavior, up to and including possible termination. People have been fired for their pass rider's behavior.
-If a legitimate problem (like you feel you should have gotten a seat) should come about, as a pass rider, be quiet, do what the employee tells you to do, and if you REALLY believe you've been wronged write down the specifics of what has happened and give the information to the employee. The employee can submit a written report and it, and the company WILL look into the issue. Do not make an issue of it at the time, it will not help. Write it up after the fact.
As you can see, life as a buddy pass rider doesn't allow you many "rights".... Many times, a person is better off searching for good ticket prices online and buying a real ticket, with all the rights and privileges thereof.
Bill doesn't give out buddy passes, and I very, very rarely gave out mine. It's just not worth it.
