How do you like Skywest?!

It's certainly a tough call. Not everyone looks at the place as a stepping stone to the majors, and the ones who do don't have many options right now. Seems to me that the smartest route financially is to take the quick upgrade on the Bro, then bid CRJ CA when seniority allows. Personally, however, I think I'd want at least a year in the right seat of the jet before moving to the left. Plus, EMB captains in years 2-3 don't make THAT much more than CRJ FOs in those years.

I wouldn't know. I don't know those people or their goals in life. Relax. What do you care if someone else makes a decision about their career that doesn't affect you?

That said, I think a lot of guys don't want to upgrade in the Bro and then later transition to the left seat of an aircraft they've never flown, particularly when that aircraft is sleeker and faster than anything they've previously handled. And take a look at the pay scales. I think I recall first year Brasilia captain pay being not much more than jet FO pay at 3 or 4 years.

Why is everyone so eager to move over to the RJ, wouldn't it be better to take the quick upgrade in the EMB?

Everyone has different goals, man.

I guess I must be missing something.....

EMB captain makes on average $11 per hour more than an CRJ -FO

EMB gets 80 hour min. guarantee, CRJ gets 75

EMB captain = turbine PIC

I'm just curious what could possibly be better about moving to the RJ as a FO? Is the scheduling/senority better on the RJ? Or do people just have Jet fever?

JD and Aloft, you beat me to my last post...

That makes sense, wanting some time in the jet before upgrading in it.

I think I would still take the upgrade in the Bro though....being able to afford a decent meal on a regular basis would be nice.

What? I wanted you to back up your vague statement and this is the best you can come up with? Don't tell me to relax unless you can read my emotional state through the internet. Just answer the question. And I disagree with you, most guys move to the jet for the "quick fix". "Better" equipment and a little higher pay (for a short time). And hey, that's cool. I wouldn't do it, but I understand it. Now, you RELAX......foo.

well....................................things that I've been considering.....

Staying in the Bro:

Better schedule/QOL
Good chance of upgrade next year
Not having to commute

But if I go to the jet the sole reason would be that I would want experience in the jet in case some day I upgrade to captain in it. I don't think I want to be PIC in something that I've NEVER flown before.

If I transition to the jet I would probably hold a line out of PSP in about 2-4 months after transition. The pay is decent at 34/hr but with overtime its 52/hr. Not bad! Plus I get the vital jet experience and get to make mistakes without getting myself into a jamble.

Going to the RJ for year 2 is probably a good idea, the pay is a bit better and you'd be on reserve as a EMB CA for a while anyways. I agree with not wanting to go straight to being CA on a plane, I'm not sure if I'll bid for CA on the EMB for that reason.

The cool thing that I've been trying to find out is if I get 2nd year FO pay after my one year with the company. I don't see anywhere in our manuals that state it must be oneyear of service as a pilot. It just says one year of service. And when I check our company computer it says 1 year of service. So I guess I'll find out on my net pay check when I would get paid for the first two weeks of December. My hire date was Dec 1 2003 with the company.

That would be way awesome. (Not betting on it, but it would be a nice surprise if it was).

Also, if I take the initial CA upgrade I'd have to go to IAH and commute. HELL NOOOO! I ain't goin to no IAH. (sorry for you texans out there no offense)

Let me know about the 2nd year pay. I'm trying to figure out what stuff goes off of my internship start date. I'm hoping the medical and employee stock purchase does, I'd be eligable already. Did you ever do the stock purchase program? It seems like a great deal

Good luck with early 2nd year pay unless they make a mistake, many before you have tried... As for upgrade vs. rj, there is a plus and minus to both so it depend on each individuals goals and priorities. Most of my class went to the barbie for a better quality of life. Those that upgraded were very flexible in their personal lives as they will be on reserve in Fresno or Houston for a long time. Just depends on what you want.... Good luck, it is an easy decision until you have to make it.

Yeah, there's ALL that stuff.............but to me it's, how long do you want to stay at SkyWest? PIC TURBINE.

I don't know why a young guy like Omar would, but hey! To each their own. Skywest is a great company.

To tell you the truth I wouldn't mind getting to Skywest and staying on there for an extended period of time. Holding a killer schedule and being home more means more to me than a huge paycheck. And after a few years, the pay at Skywest is certinally liveable.
