How bad do the airlines scrutinize over your driving record?

I wish I could have a dollar for everyone who flipped me off while I was going 65 in a 70, and they were behind me wanting to go 90.

I'm with you on this one...I normally drive about 5 over the limit (I'm 23, somewhat of an adrenaline junky, a pilot, and have never had a ticket). Those people can kiss my ^%$. I pay taxes and can drive on whatever side of the road I please. Then again I drive a GMC truck so most of the time I'm bigger than they are. They don't want to bump bumpers if you know what I mean.
 
At $400, I think I'll just slow down instead...

Also, as far as those dorks going 90 MPH; I'm sure all the extra gas stops they have to make cut in to the time that they're "saving"... not to mention getting stopped by the police... And if you're still not convinced; ever hear of the story of the tortoise and the hare?

Man, I encourage everyone to set the cruise control at 3-5 mph below the speed limit, mosey on over to the right hand lane, and turn on the cruise control. Do you realize how much easier interstate driving is when everyone has to weave around you instead of you having to worry about passing everyone? Makes for a much more stress free drive, and you can really brush tailgaters off in good conscience, since it's not your responsibility to be an accomplice to their law-breaking behavior!

This is coming from someone who used to recieve tickets regularly as a teenager, once for a 3 digit violation....

If you're doing 65 in a 70, you'd better stay in the right lane. In many states, the left lane is considered the passing lane and you can get a ticket for camping out there--and it's every bit as rude as you think the people who want to pass you are.

Most everywhere, you'll never get a ticket for going the same speed as everyone else. And like we all learned at the roller rink back in the '70s, "if you pass more skaters than skaters pass you, you're going too fast!"

All you LLC (Left Lane Cruisers) are lawbreakers and hazards. Most states have laws that only allow you to drive in the left lane if you are passing. Why can't you just you just use some common courtesy and drive in the appropriate lane. Studies show that the average speed has been going up on the interstate system, yet fatal accidents have fallen. What happened to the outcry that raising the limit from 55 to 65, and then 75 would cause a bloodbath? Didn’t happen, did it? Modern vehicles are more then capable of being operated safely 10-20 mph over the limit.
 
Driving slow in the left lane does more harm than good, especially on a very narrow road (Western Half of the PA turnpike is a good example). If they don't pass you in the proper lane (Left), they will do it in the right which is pretty damm dangerous.
 
Cruise control is a pilot's best friend. Whenever I'm driving on the highway, I set mine at 5-7mph over the posted limit, no more. I generally ride in the right lane, move left to pass, and very rarely have to tap the brakes.

If and when you do ever get a ticket, I highly recommend just hiring a lawyer. I did it for my last two and they were made to disappear. It costs a little money but your record will be clean and your insurance premium will not shoot up! Also, if your state offers defensive driving, jump on it ... not only will it keep the ticket off your record but it can get you an insurance discount as well.

If you were to do 3-5 below the posted speed limit on expressways/interstates here in Chicago, you will cause a wreck. Guaranteed. I've seen it happen. Someone is going below the speed limit (in the right lane or any lane for that matter) and everyone coming up behind them has to slam on their brakes, and work their way around them. That person has to change lanes, and cuts off someone coming up in the lane next to them, that person has to slam on their brakes......It either causes an accident or a traffic jam.

Just go with traffic!
 
I log countless miles on I-94 between Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor. It's only a four lane highway (I wish it were at least 6 most of the time). The way that highway works is that the cars are on the left lane, and all the trucks are in the right. To hang out in the right lane is flirting with death by an 18 wheeler. I cruise in the left lane the whole way doing about 75 mph (speed limit in Michigan is 70, most people do 80). I've driven by tons of cops and they don't do anything. Cops on that road, and most from what I've seen are looking for the a**holes that are going to do 15 mph faster than every else and weave in and out of traffic.

Gotta go with the flow or you'll get yourself killed, or at least that's how it goes on the roads I drive the most.

Everything you've read here is right. You really don't save too much time by going 85 versus going 65.

I think that my average speed on highways around here is about 70 or so. I have had people whip on by me going at least 90 in POS cars, and I'm like, what the hell are you thinking?

I'm sure you get the same thing. You're going at a reasonable speed in a car that can handle a lot more, and some maroon in a POS beater decides to whip by you going 20 faster than you. And you're like, yeah, so?
 
I'm with John, except i usually set my cruise control around 78-79. once you hit 80 thats when they start pulling over people. oh, also I don't know if this is the same in all states, but in michigan the speeding ticket break points are at 0-4, 5-9, 10-14 etc. so if you get pulled over doing 80 in a 70, say you were doing 78 or 79, cause then you're only going to get the same ticket as if you were doing 75, whereas if you say you were doing 80, you might as well have been doing 85 and the price/points will refelct that. Like amber said too, it is always better to go with the flow of traffic. I was in one such accident were some A$$hat was in the left lane going slow and everyone had to hit their brakes because of him. It was slippery out and I was already going under the speed limit but this guy was doing like 20mph. Seriously! If you're gonna live in a place it snows, at least know how to drive in it!

Sure, if you're in a situation where you may cause an accident by driving 5 mph below the speed limit, don't do it. But outside of places like LA, New York, and Chicago, it's usually prefectly safe to drive like this. Something is very wrong when you cannot obey the law without risking serious damage to your car and serious injury to yourself. Either the cops need to enforce the speed limits better in those places or the speed limits should be raised.
 
What frustrates me beyond belief is that here it's considered "acceptable" to go about 9 over, BUT you CAN get pulled over for even a few over. Well I don't want any tickets so I go about 3 over usually and get intimidated the entire time I'm driving because people want to go 10-15 over in the slow lane even! Well I KNOW that if I give in and speed *I* am going to be the one that gets pulled over! It's not fair to have to be intimidated for following the law! I agree with Alchemy-they need to either raise the limit, or really enforce the speeding. In NV, you can't go even 2 over, you will get pulled over.

Seriously! I got pulled over 3 times in the first few months that I lived there because I hadn't figured that out yet. I never got a ticket thank goodness! But then my dad who has lived there his whole life told me that they will pull you over for even 1 over, especially if you seem suspicious in any way because then they can bust you for more then speeding. The first time I was pulled over they searched my entire vehicle and the guy grabbed my curling iron out of my trunk and was like "WHAT IS THIS!?!?!" All suspicious-and I was like "dude you must not be married!" And then I was pulled over because the "louvers" on my Camero were apparently illegal??? Despite being factory equipment! Those cops out there have some odd rules!
 
Camaro? I was thinkng purple Ford Escort or something like that!
