Here's some food for thought...
I used to drive too fast. Three things happened to change that:
1.) Witnessed a horrible car accident caused by some knucklehead going way too fast. 3 cars, 4 people dead (the knucklehead lived).
2.) My dad jokingly challenged me to stay within 5 mph of the speed limit for an entire week. Couldn't turn down a good challenge...
3.) During that week, I figured out the time/fuel difference between driving the speed limit and driving 20 over:
I drive up to NY every now and then to visit my family. Its 297 miles exactly, and almost all highway driving. I used to drive it at 75-85 (speed limits vary from 55-65 along the route). Driving 20 over the limit, I would make it there in 4 hrs, 25 min nonstop and use every drop of gas that tank could hold (20 gal. I think).
Now, staying within 5 mph of the posted limit, it takes me about 4 hrs., 45 min. and I only use 3/4 of a tank of gas. Plus I probably piss off a lot less people, and don't have to worry about getting pulled over.
So, is it worth going 20 over to save a few measly minutes? Not the least little bit. I'm glad I saw the light when I did, because it was only a matter of time before I got another ticket. Luckily I've only ever gotten one, and that was when I was 17 for going 71 in a 65 (yeah, 6 over...go figure). Moral of the story? Slow down.
