Trust me I know some people will say that the conditions suck, the pay is horrible, that the parking lot has 3 speed bumps too many and the grass should have been cut yesterday, but you don't get to complain as a newbie. You get to learn the most important job in aviation, especially for safely moving millions of people around.

I would love if a controller would back me up on this but I think my soap box isn't nearly high enough, this is NOT a job, this is NOT a career, this is something that not everyone else can do, you lucky SOBs that have passed the at-sat above 85 this is a ticket to a life, don't complain if we have to wait a little longer, or alot longer. You're soap box IS high enough. Maybe a little too high.

I was making a joke. I could explain that, but I'm sure wikipedia would do a better job. Trust me, you're not the only person who doesn't just view ATC as an alternative to McDonalds. I could explain how I have toured towers and every time, I have left without a shaddow of a doubt that this is my intended career path. I could even list the number of very strange "coincidences" that have without a doubt been responsible for me making it to this point of the process.

I can also explain why the pay is the least contributory factor for me choosing this career field.

But I won't.

Because I was joking.
 
Hey I'm out in training now and they did say something yesterday to us that they are changing the class times for Tower/Terminal for the classes to come after August. They were running 3 class shifts a day (6am-2:30pm , 10am-6:30pm , 3:30pm - 12mid). They are going back to the old set up of 2 classes a day because the 3 is not working. This could also be the reason for the delay. They do not have enough instructors out here to cover 3 classes a day. Most of them are on significant overtime and working from like 6am - midnight. Just a little info that might be the reason.

I talked with a couple of instructors over the last few days, and one of them was working 48 hours of overtime this week, and the other was on 18.5. I could easily see them going back to the 2 class schedule. How effective can you be after getting to work at 05:30 and leaving at 23:30?
I can't believe some of them can stand up, let alone put up with the same phraseology mistakes over and over...

Hey I have a bit of a random question but do they have a place at the Academy that we can use a computer to check email? My laptop was stolen and I don't want to buy another one just for checking my email. If not I will find a library....just curious. Thanks in advance.

My bad man, I totally knew you were joking and wasn't at all implying that you are like the ones I was talking about. Just trying to get others riled up about doing this. I think if anyone goes to a tower for a visit you more than get that this job isn't a McDonald's job. Sorry if it seemed like I was directing it at you just got all passionated.

A friend who is in class as we speak told me there is a computer lab about 10 feet from the classroom. She said that some of them she has seen have MS Office (if they all don't have it by default) installed in case you need to write letters or do spreadsheets, etc. and they all have internet access.

Using them to check your email or possibly do banking/bills shouldn't be a problem. I just don't think they want people hanging out all day playing web games or watching movies or anything. And if they are anything like the PCs we had at the TSA, you won't be able to download anything. I couldn't even run the utility that allows me to access the encrypted portion of my USB drive. But other than that you will probably be all set.
 
There are about 10 computers at student services that you can use while you are here. Just keep in mind they are all on the government connection. They will be monitoring what goes through there. Porn, banking info, email or otherwise are all visible and you are responsible for what is transmitted.

Well, the time has come. I leave for the Academy in about 3 hours. It'll be about a 12 hour drive, but I'm planning on staying the night somewhere in Missouri. I'll keep everyone posted on how things are going out there.

ATC Hopeful - I know this is off topic...but you Avatar is freaking AWESOME! Where was the picture taken? Do you actually know the person or was it just a picture you found on the net?

It is me, no i am just kidding. About six guys and myself from work are planning a shark fishing trip for next month, and one of the companies that we were looking to use for a charter had this on their site. So supposedly it was taken in Destin, Fl, but i am not 100% convinced.
 
I had wondered if it was a dolphin based off the fin. I have seen both dolphins and sharks in the wild. Contrary to belief, you can tell a difference. They swim different and the fins are different. Dolphins swim up and down and their fins are horizontal; sharks swim side to side and their fins are vertical. Still an AWESOME picture!
 
Yeah i also thought it could have been a dolphin based on the nose, but you know everything you see on the internet has to be true :sarcasm: so it has to be a shark.
