Honda jet crash KFFZ, 5 fatal

Fatalities in/out and near FFZ are more common than they should be, but it's one of the busiest GA airports in the country so I guess it comes with the territory. I was in the pattern back in 2016ish when a T6 crashed on takeoff trying to make the impossible turn.

A light jet crash is intense though. Looks like the jet was registered locally too.

I can think of more than a fair number of crashes into the southwest orange grove off of 22L there

With the busy pattern, it appears the tower controller was paying attention to the approach end of the 22s once he launched the HondaJet, and the traffic in both patterns there. Didn’t see the smoke/fire until the prompt by the other aircraft to look at the departure end of the runway.

Good thing is Mesa fire station 205 is right there at the southwest corner of the airport, south of the CAF museum, maybe 1/2 mile from the impact site, if even.

Yeah, it sounds like the ARFF guys were on it almost immediately. Good on them.

Abort above V1?

That's what it sounds like, according to eyewitness reports. ADSB states they topped out at 133 KIAS, which is well above Vr for a Honda Jet, so it'll be interesting to see why they tried to abort. Flight control issue, maybe? Failure to remove gust locks?

It seems this was the first fatal crash for a Honda Jet too.

Which is wild considering the HJ holds first place in running off the runway. Probably the last airplane I would pick if I had to do a RTO.

Of the 30 incidents listed here, 25 of them are over runs.

Yikes :(

Always sad to see a fatal hull loss, and even more so if lives on the ground are taken out.

I’ll reserve my comments for later, but I have a feeling and not a good one.
