Home Dispatching

If you're on the clock, I don't think an expectation of privacy is realistic.
Not wanting to use a webcam is different than just having an expectation of privacy.
When you work in the OCC, you don't have a webcam trained on you at all times. Yes, anyone can see you but that's different from being watched at all times and being recorded for later.I'm not saying there's not cameras in the OCC either. I'm just saying there's a big difference between having to use a webcam in your home and not having privacy in the OCC.

That said, I don't know how much of a need there will be for work from home. Articles I've been reading suggest that the decrease in traffic will be permanent. People don't want to get on an airplane because of Chinavirus. Travel restrictions and quarantine requirements make air travel impractical. Zoom meetings are demonstrating that there is no need.

One article I read stated that the market value of the top 6 airlines combined is now less than the value of Zoom.

All that to say; with airlines reducing their ops center staff by one-third, there will be much more room for those remaining to spread out.

If a major airline is your goal, you may want to start reconsidering your career plans. If you work for one that's offering buy-outs, you may want to seriously consider taking it. It may be the last thing you get from them.

No economy can stay shut down or severely restricted indefinitely. If by years end or early next year there is no vaccine or treatment, the world will simply have to live with the virus and get on with life.

That being said, the future of airlines will depend like you said on how Zoom effects business travel. The question is will airlines all look like Spirit and Ryanair to cater to the leisure market or will there still be demand for business travel and how much? It is still too early to tell just how much business will be done via Zoom once virus restrictions are lifted. Vacations will not go away so there will always be a leisure market.

I am optimistic that at least a decent portion of business travel will come back once we have a workable vaccine. This is simply because when you are selling anything, it's a lot easier to convince someone/some corporation to sign a contract when you can spend time in person. A lot of business happens on the golf course, in restaurants, etc. and Zoom can only allow so much. The bigger the sale the more this becomes true. I have a family member who traveled extensively before COVID for business, now travels none, and fully expects to resume travel mostly as before once it becomes safe to do so. The biggest question that affects future of airlines is how effective any vaccine will be. If the vaccination is no more effective than say a flu shot, and you still face a risk of getting the virus, I get a lot more pessimistic about our industry.

If the vaccine doesn't work or isn't effective, we will just have to learn to live the virus. The world won't be able to hide from it forever.

That’s the issue no one wants to even attempt to address right now. Convincing the public it’s safe to well....do anything. The 24/7 fear porn over the virus has done nothing to instill any confidence in us eventually having to “live with it”.

If they can come up with a good therapeutic that keeps the most high risk (like me) from dying from it that will be help a lot. We have a vaccine for the flu I get it every year and we have pneumonia vaccines which I also got. Well I got both the type A flu and pneumonia this year. Life is full of risks but for me at least flying is not a necessity and never was. Until they get decent treatments for this that will keep me from being in the hospital on a ventilator I will not be flying and I would expect those vulnerable like me would think the same way. I do have the option of flying on a freighter which would keep me away from the general public en masse but they do seem to be getting better at treating the worst of this lets hope that continues and we can all get back to some semblance of normal life.

Multiple politicians have adopted the philosophy that one Covid death is one too many. Fauci has said that we can’t go back to anything resembling normal until Covid is completely eradicated (so like never?). And I’m afraid the vast majority go along with those ideas. The media is not going to ease up on the panic porn any time soon which adds immensely to the hysteria and group think. Bottom line is if there is never a vaccine we will NOT just learn to live with it. It’s crazy but we won’t. Continuing on with destroying the framework of society even after the mortality rate dropped from 5% to 0.26% has proven that.

Fauci said yesterday that the virus would never be completely eradicated. So vaccine or not, we will need to learn to live with it. Government money is still flowing but once the government gravy train runs out and corporations are almost out of cash, people are about to starve or revolt over lack of jobs and money, the tune of those in power will change.

You could be right, I thought the same as you in the beginning. But my outlook changed once the mortality rate came way down and governments are still deciding to double down on their original toilet paper hysteria type response. Once it became clear that we CFIT the global economy and went off horribly flawed data we decided to shut down again rather than reevaluate our response and think logically with more accurate data. At this point I expect everyone to shift their focus to the flu and other diseases if and when covid is taken care of and remain in a state of panic forever.

Mortality is going back up, but I really don’t like the direction this thread is starting to head.

Does anyone else see a problem here?
Well, for one, the goal posts continue to move. From flatten the curve, to slow the spread, to stop the spread, to perhaps eventually shut everything down until we have a vaccine. That has been my primary fear from the beginning. FUD leading to more panic and economic woe. If we think the current amount of social unrest is bad now...

We'd rather see the total deaths number... It's more dramatic. Kinda like how they show us total confirmed cases instead of ACTIVE cases, which is around half the number of total confirmed. People can and do recover from this. That being said, if we wear masks and wash our hands it'll go a long way towards us forgetting about this year.

I am reminding people from where the hammer (and sickle) that destroyed lives and livelihoods fell.

I was not being political or racist. I was hearing scorn on a tyrannical dictatorship that was more concerned with saving face than participating in the world community; a practice I shall continue to follow.

Do you call your car Japancar? Do you call your cell phone Chinaphone?

You were using a term that is widely used when making accusations to excite a base for political gain. I don’t think anyone needs a reminder where the virus came from.

With that, I’m moving on to happier thoughts, as us debating won’t solve COVID-19, or do anything to unite the dispatch group, or foster good connections for our careers.

MERS? West Nile Virus? Spanish flu (granted that is not the geographically correct name)?

It is actually an interesting reasoning behind why it was called the Spanish Flu. While the originating location is still up to debate (some say France, others say USA), the naming came from reported impacts. As WWI was underway, countries involved wanted to keep moral high so they did not fairly report by suppressing reports on how the disease affected their populations. Spain, who was not involved in WWI, could report on the full severity of the pandemic and therefor was seen as the hardest hit country.

While geographic naming have been very common, in 2015 the World Health Organization made recommendations to avoid the use of geographic naming, in order to reduce stigma. There is an entire Wikipedia article full of examples of xenophobia and racism around the world, including in China against the people of Wuhan.

I tend to prefer the technical name of viruses such as H1N1 so I would go with SARS-CoV-2. Although...I understand how that isn't catchy so I will settle on COVID-19.

No, I was referring to home dispatching never got that far outside of Skywest.

Can we save the political, racist infused names for COVID-19/Coronavirus to ourselves, please?
We can agree on Wuhan, since that's what ALL of the media originally called it.
Sorry, but you arbitrarily declaring something racist doesn't make it so.

None of the majors are dispatching from home and I have not heard of any of them wanting to dispatch from home.
