Grrr - Bombardier

Man.... I just finished a trip with a captain obsessed with spoilers and speed mode descents. I'm new to jets (440 hours in them new) and I want to learn the best technique. I like the 3 to 1 and the 1 mile per 10 knots.... those work pretty well. When we're getting slammed in the ATL it's tough not to use 'em but who cares if we extend the DW so we don't use the damn boards.

If I turn to the right and then turn back to the left am I doubling my chances for a flight control failure hydraulic failure?

Get real, please. How often do you change flap settings in the airplane, and how often do flap failures in the CRJ seem to occur?

Especially in relation to a completely different system, operated by different means.

Yes.... let's review.... the flaps are controlled by Hydraulic System.... 4. :D

Jeeeze. The -200 slows down fine, with or without spoilers. Even in the clean configuration it probably slows down about as well as the Brasilia does. At 200 kts for flaps 8 you get less ballooning effect anyways, probably more comfortable for the pax.

And ref+15 being more 'comfortable'? Crap, I'd be more comfortable on my couch drinking a beer... but if I'm in an airplane I'm going to fly it how it was designed to be flown.

Good grief, this is ridiculous. The CRJ probably slows down quicker and descends better than just about any other airliner out there. This should not be a big deal.

I beg to differ.

The spoilers work just fine in the 200. In fact I think they work really well compared to some airplanes.

Agreed. Sometimes I wish the speed brakes in the 717 were as effective as the CRJ's. That airplane could slow from 250 to 200 on a dime.

I don't like the feeling of looking and sitting at +5 pitch, that is all.

Get comfortable, because it's a lot worse on other airplanes that you'll eventually fly. On the DC-9 series, you'll have pitch +9 at 200 knots clean. It's not a big deal.

Eh...I'm on the 700 which is a different animal (and the spoilers are even more crappy), but as a general rule I don't usually go flaps 8 until 200 knots at the most. Usually I wait till I'm about 10 kts over maneuvering speed on the speed card. The only time I'll drop flaps above 200 is if ATC decides to give us a crossing restriction, then half way through the descent tack a speed on there. But even then I try to use spoilers beforehand.

I used to pick flaps over spoilers, but now that fuel is expensive I try to use spoilers more because you can always put those back.

:yeahthat: This is a man that knows how to fly a CRJ!

I know it's not typical to bring the flaps back up but it is an option.

Seems awfully sloppy to me. It's much more uncomfortable for the pax to feel that ridiculous pitching moment every time the flaps come out than the very slight rumble from the spoilers.

.......but who cares if we extend the DW so we don't use the damn boards.

The guy behind you and the dozen planes behind him care. Use your spoilers.

I flew the CRJ for over two years and can't remember a single time when I ever HAD to use the spoilers. I did, however, see crews make the CHOICE to use them, usually when they had planned poorly, mis-programmed the VNAV, or, failed to account for changing winds in the descent.

I might also add that when ATC asks you to slow to ___ KIAS, that doesn't mean that the new speed should be reached instantaneously. Pull the power back, maintain altitude (or slow your descent) and it'll slow down.

I'm not going to say I haven't used them -- nor am I going to say DON'T EVER use them. They're on the airplane and if you NEED them - use them.

But don't use them as a crutch and then call it "technique".

Speedbrakes aren't a "crutch," they're a flight control. This ridiculous aversion to use of speedbrakes drives me nuts. If you use them smoothly, then there's no reason to avoid them anymore than you would avoid using ailerons. Speedbrakes have their place.

I don't use landing gear...if you need landing gear to have a soft landing YOU GUYS SUCK!
