German Wings A320 crashed

Are you sure they are rent-a-cops? Typically airport police are real police just assigned to the airport by whatever governing body is over the airport.

You are correct, they work for MWAA. And their tickets are heard in Fairfax County Court. I have never met anyone who has actually liked them and many have had trouble with them knowing the laws they enforce. The airport would be better served by having Fairfax County or VA do the policing (which are not liked much either).

No it's a threat still. But a gun shouldn't have been the first thing used. There's a reason why stun and mace exist.

But as usual, they'll get off scotch free because it was a lethal force met with lethal force.

The educational lesson here being that officers are trained to use lethal force for just about any conceivable weapon. So once again, if one has a mental individual off their meds as a family member in their home, do not call the police. There are other, safer options.

How exactly does one get away 'scotch free'...do they miss the after dinner party?

To one up the bad guy, it is precisely why the Dulles airport rent-a-cops now carry AR-15s strapped in front of themselves like they are some special forces group. It makes me shudder to think someone allowed those guys to have them. I am not sure I would trust them with anything more than a can of pepper spray and 2 shiny quarters to call the real cops when things get bad.

I do think mental health and implications both in this country and around the world need better understanding. All too often we understand the "being sick" but not being "mentally sick." All sicknesses need better understand from society and a desire to help rather than to embarrass or shame.

I've always gotten a bit nervous when I've seen battle rifles in public places. Even if they are being held by the proper authorities. Weather it be in France or Mexico it isn't my favorite thing to see a guy walking around with an FAL, AK or AR variant. I've always liked coming back home and not seeing that. Oh well.

In Italy, the Carabinieri roll with subguns, so you're good there if you so choose.

I was based in IAD for 5 years and never even once had an interaction with them. But they seemed ok

I gotta ask how you're living your life if you and your acquaintances have had that many interactions with them.

Sadly nothing exciting. Mostly driving to the airports and dropping people off or getting dropped off. Been threatened a ticket for not having a front plate a few times (my car is not registered in VA nor does the state require a front plate), speeding seems to get nearly everyone (my ticket was tossed as the in car camera did not support the ticket), and there have been other encounters by friends and coworkers (we really are not that exciting of a crowd). I will admit I do have a dark red sports car which I would never buy it red again.
