Geoprefs for Pubnat 8

I'm going to put IA and IA. The only place I want to work :)

I haven't seen anyone mention MN. Any thoughts on ZMP or MSP tower/tracon?

MSP tower - Not taking new hires, if you want tower you'd have to work Duluth, Anoka, Flying Cloud, etc. and transfer in.

ZMP - just had their numbers cut way down but there is some hope I guess.

what's the take on FL? good chances or no? my take on it is why live in a place with a high cost of living? i've always heard that about FL. am i off base or is there anyone out there who is currently working at a facility in FL that has some insight? i just want the most for my money. the pay scale is the same everywhere you go.

That is why the FAA has locality pay and or COLA. starts at about 14 percent for most the US and goes up to the mid 30 percent for California and such and similar COLA amounts for AK and HI. Compared to TN everywhere is expensive

yeah, you can't beat TN anywhere. it's so beautiful and cheap and great people! but i have a friend who works at boston center and they never mentioned anything to me about cola!!! they are actually living paycheck to paycheck with a 70 something base salary? doesn't make sense to me. his rent is like 1500 for an apartment! i thought it might be close to that in miami or somewhere, but i really have no idea. just guessing.

so where do you have good chances?

This doesn't really ever make sense to me. A person living in a place where things cost less, makes less. It always seems to work out about the same. I live in California. An apartment here can cost well over $1500 in rent. I think my husband and I made 38,000 last year (not each, all together). We pay $1000 for our apartment, insure three vehicles and generally don't go without. If he took home 70+ and I still had my income then we would be pretty fat and happy. Maybe it seems hard, but cost of living just isn't a real issue. Locality pay (this is what most people have, COLA is mostly just for Alaska) more that makes up for the difference. I say that because I know, that in one of the most exspensive states to live in, I could make it work even without the 14% that everyone gets. I know that I could balance my budget with the 37,000 or whatever base is. And BTW, SoCal locality is well above 20%...Florida too

honestly i think my friend is in debt and also bad with budgeting. there's no way anyone should live check to check with that much money coming in. maybe i should introduce them to dave ramsey!!!;)

Just a heads up. FL is one of the hardest states to get into according to a manager I talked to. Everyone wants to come here and very few get chosen. If that is the only place you're willing to go then so be it, but if you want the job, take what you can live with. FL & GA are the most desired locations according to the manager I talked to.

Good luck guys!

Are there any posts/threads regarding where the need is currently for controllers? The only post I saw recently was about Logan (Boston, MA) not hiring through 2010.
Thank you.

I have been consumed with the subject of saving vs spending, increasing FICO scores, budgeting, being fiscally responsible, what we need vs what we want, etc for a few years now. All my research indicates that people make very poor financial decisions today due to the society we live in.
Many feel a need to keep up with the Jones', the need instant gratification is too great, and most people are materialistic. We can see this in the housing meltdown and the huge number of people in debt today.
We dont need new electronics, new cars, nice houses. We do need food, basic shelter and clothing (which can be obtained cheaper via coupons, shopping bargains, and renting or owning a fixer upper). Even here in the expensive Boston area, a family of 3 can live well on an income of 50k.
Ok I will step down from my podium now!

First post here. Hello all. :) I'll be putting down MO, KS, MN, & WI. I'd like to stay in either KC, the Twin Cities, or Milwaukee. Maybe someplace else if my wife and I come up with something fun.

I took the test with you.

How can you put down 4 states when they only ask for 2?

If they only ask for two in the Geo Pref's email, I was not aware of that and will have to narrow it down. I was still thinking of the initial application when they let me choose 10, that's all.

Rumor has it they will be going off of the application prefs. However if they shoot out the emails then you have to pick two and put the other two in the comments.

This is why nobody should ever have more than 2 kids, you will at some point have to pick your two favorites

There is a comment section. Specifically they ask for 2 but you can always put more. As to whether it hurts you or helps you, I'll leave that speculation up to you. Some people think its good to list specific facilities you want in the comment section, some people think its a horrible idea.:dunno:

so what if i wanted to pick HI, specifically OGG (kahului) is that a hard place to get in to? what about alaska?

I think HI got all their applicants squared away after they had the PUBHI announcement. Alaska on the other hand, i think they're still taking people.

But in all honesty, everyones word is a crapshoot in entirety. No one has anymore information than the other guy. Choose what you want. Just make sure to pick somewhere you're willing to live 10+ years.
