I can't confirm or deny what John or the guy in that thread spoke of just yet.

I haven't been told not to show up on Monday, and I have a few buddies who are in systems right now who had class today, and they haven't been told not to sure up tomorrow. One friend is in BI right now, and he also was not told to not to show up tomorrow.

Might be unsubstantiated or verifiable information coming out. :panic::rolleyes:
 
When folks say, "classes canceled," they don't usually mean current classes, they mean all *future* classes are canceled.

It's incredibly expensive to train somebody, and there's almost never a reason to simply empty the school house and say, "Have a nice life, you're done!" They'll usually let the current folks finish, then they'll weigh their options from there.

That's exactly what Express has done.
 
Look, guys, I don't have any experience in the airline industry, but I do know a thing or two about business cycles and corporate America.

Bear Stearns had to sell itself for less than the value of its headquarters. We are talking about an institution that survived the Great Depression and two world wars that went poof.

What does that tell you about how severe the recession we are entering is going to be?

Now, I hope I'm wrong and that the economy just catches a cold, not pneumonia.

But even if the economy catches just a cold, cyclical companies are going to take a hit. And that means hiring will slow at a minimum. It means layoffs are likely.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that's what I think.

Let's put it this way. I don't anticipate my commission checks getting any bigger this year. I just hope I can keep them the same.

No 'official' word yet but some of the recent interviewees were told that they were being put into a pool for later classes. And from good ole' Capt'n Dale, they've cancelled any new classes for the foreseeable future. Just means we have a loooooooong time on reserve until they start up again! :D

The big thing is really the accreditation of the school - as long as it's regionally accredited, I don't think you'll have a problem. If it's a state university that otherwise has a regular campus, you'll be fine. The problem has been these nationally accredited, for profit-schools that are handing degrees out like candy. I think an online program such as this would probably be a good idea, though. Let me know if I can be of help.

There's another part of me that says "get out now, you need health insurance!" but who's to say that I won't simply be on the bottom of another seniority list when the furlough bus pulls up to that place and starts hauling folks off.

Honestly? I figure if I'm booted out the door, I've got options. What's the WORST thing that happens to me?

-ExpressJet furloughs.
-I can't get on at Compass.
-I can't get on at Republic.
-I can't get on at Mesaba.
-I don't go back to Amflight (even though I'm eligible for rehire)
-I can't find a flight instructing job
-I can't get a job as a ski instructor
-I can't get into grad school
-I can't get a job doing IT

If all that happens, then, well, I can pretty much replace my income while working at Wendy's, so I'm not gonna stress TOO much. But there are plans A through H.

Not to sound like a prick but didn't you majored in philosophy or something like that? Don't know if you were being sarcastic about it but having a major in that subject area won't really pay zee billss!!:o

To each his own. If someone wants to take the fast route and don't want to CFI then thats his/her decision. If him/her gets laid off, then thats his/her problem. If you haven't noticed, working hard to get where you are is now "old fashioned" and if you chose that route, you are considered a "sucker". Survival of the fittest aye!!

Oh btw. I keep hearing people who say they don't want to go to college because it is going to slow their advancement toward the regionals. Well HELLLOOOOO you practically only go to school a couple days a week, and what ever happened to summer and spring breaks? people are just lazy. I have plans to go to Vaughn College next year fall (going to an open house next month) and I am in no rush because by the time I step out of college, I should be stepping into a regional (or so I plan it). Anyways Jtrain is right in the future there are going to be people like me who have a 4 year college degree, CFI, CFII, MEI, and many things to go with it, who do you really think the airline is going to choose if you do not have atleast those things?

Philosophy is a pre-law degree, as are history, English, and most social science degree's. I'm also fully planning on having a masters degree done here in another 2-3 years which would help out if/when I need to/want to get out of this job.

I refuse to be married to any job. I'm marrying TheShortOne, not my RJ.
 
Ok, so, I'm apparently an arsehole for calling out Alex for stuff like logging 20+ hrs of turbine time and even 6 hrs of jet time before he even soloed a C-152. I still think it's intellectually and professionally dishonest, but whatever.

Chalk it up to not having slept in my own bed since Thanksgiving, and having spent only 5 days with my gf since then.

And to the fact that I'm not one of those skipping instructing or towing banners or throwing meat missiles or aerial survey, yet will still be competing unfavorably with JTrain and the other 300 ExpressJet dudes on the street come October.

What anyone thinks isn't really the point. What the FAR's say is. I logged a bit of AC690 "dual instruction" when I was a PPL. It was perfectly legal per the FAR's. Yep, it was twin turbine time.

Citationkid has been around here since he was.....really a kid. His post are positive, upbeat, and without flames. I don't see why anyone would want to "call him out". If I remember right, his father is a pilot with the state and his mother is an airline pilot. You might think that could lead to some extra special connections in the flying community that not everyone has. If I remember right, he's experienced an engine failure and had a crashish landing in the rockies, which is more than I can say for myself, outside the sim.

Anyhow, that's how I see it. This site gets waaay to personal waaaay to often.
