Furlough Estimates

That's 5%, if they can get them all to leave which ain't nothin I guess.

If they pay me my current FO salary at guarantee plus retirement contribution from now until I turn 65, I'll go away and find something else to do. They can even keep my sick bank as a parting gift. :)

Man I’d be ALLLL over that too. Seeee Yaaaaaaa!

Not really sure how these things go to the news so quick but here it is. 2500-3500 possible overstaffed summer 2021 (retirements included).

After announcing that it would no longer fly its 18 wide-body 777s, Delta told its 14,500 pilots that it expects to have 7,000 more than it needs in the fall, according to a memo to flight operations employees first reported by Reuters.

wow

That's not really shocking to me. Still have what half the airline parked? I think summer 2021 was more what we were looking at and bring overstaffed 2500-3500 was more wow to me than 7k in the fall. I imagine the fall won't be much different for the rest of the industry.

Weren’t they saying summer of 2022 is what they were basing their staffing needs off of?
That's what was said in a flight ops update last week but the email today didn't include what those numbers would look like. Guess after we see numbers for early retirement and how many take it, then something along the lines for 2022.... not sure. If that was summer 2021 then summer 2022 must still not be much better. I'd rather have pessimistic outlook to plan for the worst, I guess.

If SWA is radically changing things then you know, we are in for some rough times. My question now is how long am I away from 121 industry... 2, 3, 4 years? More?

I think with the legacy retirement most legacy pilots won’t be on the street for more than 3-4 years. Hopefully anyway. Anyone else who’s to say really...

"Radical restructuring" doesn't seem positive.

Well a bit of context, he said that if things don’t improve by September 30th not only SWA but the whole industry will see radical restructuring. He also said April was the bottom, May is slightly better and June is looking better than May. Basically just wait and see.

Sheesh. Like sitting in an airline version of death row, with clemency being bandied about....or not.
Pretty much, I put my family on financial lockdown back in March. Plus growing up a with my dad who was furloughed three times I’ve always been pretty tight with money to begin with. At least my wife finally understands why now.

Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. All I can do right now.

Exactly this. After going through 9/11 and the Great Recession, I've always been conservative with my finances. When I was a CA at SkyWest, I was still driving my old paid off Honda Accord while FOs were telling me about their nice BMWs and crazy high student loans. I did splurge on some nice things, like my mountain and road bikes. But I paid cash for them and they were relatively inexpensive compared to cars.

We have enough in savings to make it a few years on furlough, if we include UI and my wife going back to work. That definitely takes some stress off, and makes a lot of the sacrifices the past few years well worth it.
