Furlough Estimates

The worse part is there are some guys who are not going to come out of this alive. Historically speaking, after the 9/11 furloughs and the 2008 GFC furloughs/shut downs, there were pilot suicides. I know a VX CA from Aloha who told me of two Aloha pilots who took their lives after the March '08 shut down.

:(

Very true post 9/11. Suicides, divorces, bankruptcies, lost homes. It was a terrible time.

With the way some people talk in here, it's no wonder there's suicides. People are struggling right now. Struggling to figure out what's next, how to provide for families. And here you guys are talking about airlines never hiring again.

Let people get their lives sorted out and figure out what's happening before we start talking about all this super depressing stuff. It's also the doomers that haven't offered to reach out and ask people are doing. Maybe reach out and ask how people are doing? Try to prevent suicides, not cause them.

The rare valid point on JC.

Get bored someday read a book called the rational optimist. Among other things it highlights how fearporn sells and people like to hear everything is coming crashing down around their heads.

I see CARES 2.0 passing. Much of what is going on now is political theater. They are pushing passage closer to the election so they can brag to voters about how much good they did. I don't think either side wants to see mass layoffs one month before an election. I'm also optimistic that airlines will see significant benefit this go around too. Just my unqualified opinion.

I think you may be right. Today, the Democrats and Republicans both gave up their best form of leverage by agreeing to fund the government until the end of the year. Why would either give up that leverage if there wasn’t already a deal behind the scenes agreed to? It may take until the end of the month though because both sides will want to say they saved the day at the last minute.

Sadly I think some want to show their arrogance and squash any optimism as ignorance and blindness. Yet no one can predict the future. But the internet forums is a majority of big egos. And while I don't think they want to come with bad intentions, they have no idea.

I mean there is a chance things could work out in terms of a legislative stay of execution for a lot of people. Which trust me I'd love to see. I have a lot of friends at United and a few at Delta. However I would estimate the chance of that is really low at least with my experience working on the board of a 527 (super pac) organization. We have a bill in the Congress and Senate and our bills are most certainly dead. The Cares 2.0 stands better chances but I'm not sure even if there is the political will that the bureaucratic process timeline will work out. I wish you all good luck and all the best.

A lot of people with little to no skin in the game *I fall into that category currently too* who are just trying to make others more miserable than they are. And some people who do have some stake in all of this, who I guess just can't get past the worst case scenario. I promise this isn't going to end as badly as the doomers say it will. People will fly again. People will pay money to fly again. JFC if you can't imagine that.

I've been applying to a lot of jobs, thankfully have some interviews. Even with cares 2.0 I know I won't be flying for a while. I'm okay with it, I try to not complain and still feel lucky to have progressed this far. It's part of this industry, I'm paying my dues. We will be back flying. Things will improve. Life will go on.

I had a job lined up as a bike shop manager. I chose to do what made me happy and bike stuff is going really well these days with gyms closed. Do something that makes you happy. You will get through this. If I can help in any way do let me know. I'm sorry if I came off as a doomer. I do have a little bit of political experience I was trying to guesstimate what will happen for everyone's benefit. Not to make people miserable.

No hard feelings. I've had a roller coaster of emotions the last 6 months myself. I've actually been a lot happier the last few months. Hope you're doing good my man.

So Covid's deaths aren't so bad as to rush a little for a vaccine? Or there's no way to be sure the vaccine isn't poisin so don't take it? I've been laughing along with the "I'm not gonna be first in line" jokes but seriously, you think this vaccine is going to harm you or the chances of it harming you are greater than getting Covid?

If the argument is the vaccine isn't going to do anything because it hasn't been tested enough then I don't see why we wouldn't take it in hopes the rushed process does create something useful.
I think both are pretty unknown. We are still finding new symptoms of the virus, but I'm suppose to believe we can prevent it and know the side effects in 6 months. I'll take my chances with a natural disease vs a man made vaccine that's unproven Maybe in a year or two when the bugs are worked out, I'll give it a shot

Doing great. I structured myself for a furlough and was saved. So I’m just fine. Lots of free time and money. I can’t complain. We’ll see if I can hold a line next month but I can be in reserve from home. I planned on this and it’s working.

This is one of the best posts I’ve read on here in a while. Well said my friend

Any suggestions for a starter bike that doesn't break the bank? Just for exercise and weight loss.

My Walmart bike is just too heavy.

Around here, bikes are like toilet paper was in April. I was in Academy over the weekend, and this store had maybe 4 and they were unicorn-pink BMXs.

FWIW, I got a GT on sale at Dick’s last year. It wasn’t expensive and rides well.

Faux News uses this almost exclusively to whip their supporters into a frenzy. Look no further than their headlines. It's almost always doom/gloom inspired to instill fear into the simple-minded conservative. Strange how America, according to the Orange Menace, can be simultaneously great and a quagmire of anarchy that only he can fix.

All of which has either happened or escalated during, and continues under, his watch.
