First Year Pay

If you've only got 9 days off a month why don't you quit and get a 'real' job that pays double?
the 9-12 days off don't include the work days that I show up at 6am and go home at noon, or the overnighters where I show up at 5pm and get off at 11am the next day. This job has so much free time it is silly. I had a real job for 10 years before this and I have twice the time off than I did before plus I have variety. I hate the 9-5 grind.

That's cool, I guess I'm just really lazy :). I look back at the times when I was on reserve and think "how did I ever work that much???". Although not flying while on reserve is pretty sweet, I enjoyed it nicely.

man I think you guys convinced me enough to put eagle on my regionals list, now please tell me there's truth to upgrades coming down.

Sure, I'll tell you: Upgrade time is coming down......

.......and Eagle is going to exercise the option for the additional 25 CRJ's.....

.....and Santa Clause is real.......

.....and Max is straight......... :D :D

;)
I kid.

Speak for yourself. I can count on getting over 100 hours credited per month, every month. And still getting about 9-12 days off to go with it.

The problem with this is at some point down the road, AA could start a marketing push to compete with the guys that lowered their costs in bankruptcy . "New jet service to XXX!" So, the Saab guys start losing routes. There goes the 100 hours a month. We had guys here that were banking on that last year, until management tried a "screw the pilots to get them to cave" technique of building lower credit lines and giving even more flying to reserves and build-up line holders. Suddenly, the guys that were crediting 100+ were getting around 85, and we were short staffed!

Just have to keep in mind whatever is going on at the time can come to a screeching halt at any moment. Personally, I'd rather NOT bank on 100 hours of credit to pay the bills. If I get it, great. That's money for some leisure activites or to go into savings for those months I DON'T get what I need. If I don't, I'm not on the phone with bill collectors trying to explain how I over-extended myself.

To me, it's like the guy in the corner office saying "Hey! I'm gonna get this fat bonus this year," setting his budget up anticipating the bonus and getting a Xmas turkey instead of $$$. Sure, he's got a quality bird to eat, but he doesn't have gas or electricity to cook it because he spent all of his normal salary already.

Wasn't it an exclusive membership to the Jam of the Month Club?

I hear complaints about first year pay all the time and generally people quote 18k-20k first year but when I talk to friends in the industry this does not seem to be the case. I've heard of 29k at Skywest, and over 30k at XJET. Seems like if you know how to work the system you can gain extra money, such as working 90 hours and being payed for 120. So I wonder what is a realistic estimate of first year regional pay?

WOW!? how do you make a living on such little pay? I assume you have a side-job or something?

btw, hello again everyone, been rather busy with end of school beginning of new job... but I think ill show up more often :).. this is a good source for news and funny arguements... I am not even gonna try to catch up..

but seriously, how do you guys do it on such a salary for the first year? what about the second, third years?

By living within your means. When second year pay rolls around, with it's 50% increase, don't stop living like you did as a CFI / first year FO. It works.

I made a little under $15K my first year at Skyway.

Albeit it was back in 1996.

One word for ya! SUGARMOMMA! ;) I'm kidding, I'm kidding.

But I was blessed with zero debt.

Debt's a dream killer IMHO.

SO true!

I know, I know, but I don't want a bunch of young, neophyte regional pilots trolling dog parks and suburban wine bars looking for "sugarmommas" because "Doug told me that I need one!" :)

First I have to get my certificates........then I can go meet all these sugar mommas and tell them I am a pilot...........I'll tell them I am only around for about half the month............so they can get someone else for the other times.

"Sure baby, take care of me and when I upgrade I'll take care of you.............but it may be in 4 or five years!"

Then you'll get B*^CH SLAPPED, she'll walk out with some guy who is half your age and you'll be sittin' there with your drink and hers wonderin'. What went wrong..............Dough said it is supposed to work this way!

I can see it now!:rotfl:

Just want to add some seriousness to this. If you are lucky enough to have a great, supporting woman, it means everything, especially if that is all you have, besides a few friends!

That support is tremendous! The few dreams that I have and want to pursue are possibilities because of some blessed natural abilities, but more importantly because of the GF. It is amazing what their support means!

Just remember, once and a while we need to give it back to them!

There's a lot of truth to that.

It's not macho to say or cool on other sites to admit, but if the people that are important to you aren't 100% supportive (and lenient at times), it ain't gonna work.

True and not very difficult. We as a gender tend to get so involved in our work, our hobbies, our own lives that we forget about others. The one left out is usually the one who means the most to you! I think this is especially true in this profession when we are just getting started or trying to get to where we want to be.

Be it financial support, mental support, what ever it is, if they give it to you, remember it. In reality, most of our women are easily pleased! A little reminder that we know they are there and are appreciated is all it takes.

Trust me, once you have it, you don't want to lose it!
