F100 & MD-80

doug when you said you'd rather fly the 80 as opposed the 757 or 737 did you mean as pilot or passenger?

As a pax I'm sure he has commented several times bout how he would love flying the 757/767.

But that from a pax perspective he isn't all that fond of the 757.

Cause of it's slender cabin. He says the seating leaves much to be desired.

I love the plane. But far be it for me to speak for another maybe he might comment more.

As a pilot, I hear the 757/767 are awesome machines. The 767's have a comfortable passenger cabin, 757's cabins are miserable, in my perspective.

The 737-800's cockpit was seemingly designed by accountants looking to put junk in every slot of occupiable space, so it's like sitting in a computer network rack with a few windows. I dunno, perhaps Flyover has a different perspective, but just stepping into the cockpit to ask for the jumpseat gives me a headache!

800 is just like the MD-88 in that it's an old design spiffed up with some glass up front. So if you've flown any kind of 737 you are comfortable with the overhead, throttle quadrant, and center pedastal. The glass is supposed to be like the 777. It's goood.

All in all I liked it, but I sure missed the quiet 88 cockpit. and being able to have my flight kit up beside me instead of behind me.

Never flew the 757/767.

That makes me sad. I dearly loved working the little Fokkers! I held the best lines out of ORD on those, because nobody else wanted them! My last line that I held while ORD based was on the F-100 (Sept 2001), all awesome BOS & DCA overnights. I didn't get to do a single one that month.
I'll never get to work a F-100 again.

Go to Canada, JetsGo picked up about 19 of the American Airline Fokkers.

Last time I checked, Continental has less than 10 MD80's left in the fleet.

The seating in the back of the 757 sucks. They jammed everyone together. The -88 is the same way especially if you get a seat behind the galley with a great view of the engines. But then again nothing beats first class in the 777 or 767-300 ERS..

I've never flown on an F100, that i know of...

but I don't like the MD80 because of the proximity of the engines to my head.. and the noise associated when I end up seated in back and there's no possibility of entertainment on long flights like PHX to ATL... for a 4 hr flight, they shouldn't have been using 80's just because it's too long with nothing to do....

The seating in the back of the AA 757 most definitely sucks. I flew at the very back a few weeks ago on one when I was going to Hawaii b/c first class was full, I thought I was going to die. But for me, sitting at the back of an MD-80 doesn't bother me, just as long as it has MRTC.

The only aircraft that I have a problem with are those RJ's, those puppies are the pits. I am willing to pay extra money to fly on bigger equipment. Except for the RJ's, I just want a comfortable seat & do not really care about the size of the airplane. I miss my days when I worked for the cargo airlines & I can sit on the upper deck of a 747, those were the days.

Ever get on a L1011 jumpseat? Oh heaven!

I didn't like riding the RJ because I couldn't use my laptop without doing some contortionalist vee angle and then typing on the keyboard like I'm soaking my fingernails in Palmolive so I'd ride the AWA A319 or the AA S80 to work when I was DFW-based.

Plus, having to walk out in the rain and getting my bags soaked wasn't very pleasant.

Was it like the DC-10? Two large swivel Captain's chairs?

Nah, just big!

Two full sized jumpseats, loads of space and huge windows. The cockpit was so wide, on one of the jumpseats you sat slightly behind and to the left of the captain in front of a HUGE forward facing window.

MMMMmmmm....L1011

RJ's aren't the pits per se. I like the Challengers over the ERJ 135/145 in terms of cabin width but I hate how low the windows are on the CRJ's. I'd still take an RJ over a propjob any day.

The best regional airplane ever: ATR 72-212A

Had the PW127s, with 6 blade props that were SO unbelievably quiet, there's actually a (true) funny story about a pax going on and on about how nice these new 'jets' are and how glad she was not to be flying one of those 'awful prop planes'. She continued her praising of the 'jet' she was riding until the FA pointed out the window at the engines. These planes also had nice roomy overheads (okay, you still couldn't fit rollerbags in them, but they were far superior to the SF3), and a nice big cabin with 'real airplane' feel to it.

I rode in back of a Simmons ATR with the six bladed props on it. My oh my what a comfortable ride. I loved it! Even had a spot for my bag in that aft closet!
