F100 & MD-80

Why do passengers hate the F100 & MD-80 line so much. I mean, I used to fly on the F100's a lot, but since they don't service my airport anymore, now I would have to go out of my way just to fly on one. And I fly on MD-80's all the time and I just don't see why people don't like them that much.

I don't know about the F100. The MD-80 gets generally favorable ratings to my knowledge. The 2-3 seating in the back means fewer middle seats, more aisle and windows. On the other hand some of the 3-3 Boeings are very cramped in the back.

The MD-90 version got rave reviews from passengers. It has a little nicer interior and seats than the 80 and was very quiet, even in the back.

If you've got figures showing the 80 is hated by passengers I'd be interested to see them. I will say as more Airbuses get into the airline fleet all the Boeings will look worse by comparison. (Got to remember the MDs are Boeings now).

The only thing I don't like about the MD80's are the noise of the engines as they fly over my house...too loud!

I really like the 3+2 seating.

I've flown on the F100's several times in Europe but that was a while ago. I don't recall them being uncomfortable or unbearable.

Favorite (current) plane is the 717.

I personally try to avoid Continental's MD-80s when possible because the seats in First are narrower, the overhead bins smaller, and they don't have IFE like the rest of the fleet. They aren't bad though, and 'hate' is definitely not a word I'd use to describe my feelings for them.

I dunno, kind of a subjective answer.

Personally, I'd rather fly an MD-80 than a 757 or next generation 737 any day. Two by Three seating and a comfortable seat pitch makes flying great. Now add on the inflight entertainment system of the MD-90 and you've got a great passenger experience.

But that's just me!

I've only ridden on MD-90s, but I really like them (more than 737-300s that would probably serve similar routes). The 2-3 seating is nice, they are modern and quiet, they have IFE, and unlike most people, I think they look cool (I like all planes with fuselage mounted engines).

Cool, I'm happy that most of you all enjoy the F100's & MD-80's. See, the reason why I was asking was b/c of course, I lurked over into the a.net forum and saw people saying that they hated those type of aircraft, but a lot of the a.net people are crazy anyway. My mom sometimes hears from passengers saying that they dislike F100's & MD-80's, so we've never been able to figure that out b/c we've always had pleasurable experiences on those aircraft. It would be cool if they could install in-flight entertainment on the MD-80's though.

Considering they're still battling a "Ten Year Land War" over Boeing versus Airbus when 99.999999% of the combatants haven't been closer than seat 1A to the cockpit, I wouldn't put a lot of weight on what's said over there.

"Air Kurkingystan adds a 717! See the new livery!"

But apart from the forums, the pics are awesome.

That's the first most repetitive thread on those airliners.net formus: "Boeing VS Airbus"

Second most... "Are pilots paid too much" and "Pilots are nothing but bus drivers!"

You can try to explain how you can become a bus driver literally overnight, flying to get to the airlines takes years; bus drivers don't have to take a career ending medical every six months, etc. etc. etc. You think they listen or understand that? After a while, you just give up on them, and leave...

Of the guys that post there, I'd say a good 60% if not more, are just kids/teenagers who base everything about flying on their Microsoft Flight Simulator [insert year brand here] game.

I ride MD 80s a bunch, and I'd vote for them as the best full size airliner. (Haven't been on a -90 or a 717). They are a hell of a lot quieter on the passengers, and the seats just seem to have the right pitch and knee room.

If you are sitting behind the wing on a 737-747-757-767-MD-11, you can almost count on some degree of hearing loss on take off and landing. Noise is fatiguing. (sp?)

Of all the airliners I have been on, I love the look of the 727 the most. However, close to the end of Delta's 727 time in the inventory, it was almost criminal how many seats were crammed into the fuselage. I'm a fairly small guy, but I couldn't get into, or out of any of the coach seats without bumping my knees.

Working the F-100 & MD-80 flights (which I did *a LOT*) while I was with AA, we would often hear "oh, this is a small plane!" when people were boarding.

If they consider those two types small, I wonder what they'd say if they boarded an EMB or a SF3!

The same thing.

I've heard it a million times riding on the ERJ. The FAs love it, I'm sure.

Yeah.

The EMB was one of the reasons I left Eagle. From the F/As standpoint, it was awful in just about every way imaginable. People were forever complaning about how small it was. Which I think is what made me so suprised to hear people get on AA's F-100s and Slug-80's and say that they were small!

Continental phased out there MD-80's didn't they....?

Didn't know any were still flying in CO colors.

I think Continental still flies about 14 MD-80's. Ok, just checked, they do still fly the MD-80's, but I'm not exactly sure on how many.

Just to let you guys/gals know:

American has planned its final revenue Fokker 100 flight on September 8th as AA2573 departing White Plains at 0933 and arriving at O'Hare at 1033, subject to change.

That makes me sad. I dearly loved working the little Fokkers! I held the best lines out of ORD on those, because nobody else wanted them! My last line that I held while ORD based was on the F-100 (Sept 2001), all awesome BOS & DCA overnights. I didn't get to do a single one that month.

I'll never get to work a F-100 again.
