Embarasssing ALPA Magazine Blunder

People want to be someone they're not for the notoriety.

After 9/11, even on the mad dog, there were at least 10 to 15 people claiming to have been at "ground zero" and asking about upgrades to first class from the flight attendants on many flights.

Oh hell, how many "Tomcatters" have we had right here at Jetcareers? Lots.

TomCatter........the original kill.

Wow. Just wow. Just imagine trying to be this guy now. I hope he wasn't too invested in this career choice.

WOW! It's one thing to be "TomCatted" out on JetCareers or something similar but this is so much beyond that in scale...

We wouldn't have put up with his gruff back when I flew the Mustang over Nazi Germany in Dubya Dubya Two!!! :sarcasm:

Stick a fork in him?

Several times.

Heat it up first, nice n' hot.

Then, make him go out and actually do the things he says he can do. Send him into a burning building, he probably wouldn't make it out. Send him up in a fighter jet, he probably wouldn't land. ;) (Nah, that would be a waste of a perfectly good airplane.)

Posers piss me off. You want to impress others with stories, then go DO something worthy of telling a story about.

The fallout from this article has been quite disappointing. I had enjoyed reading the first professionalism profile in the previous issue of ALPA pilot and applauded the union’s goal to uncover genuine professionals and share their stories.

We all know true professional pilots—those we desire to emulate with our conduct and work ethic. Most of these individuals will never be the feature of a prominent article, but they continue to labor diligently and faithfully in their profession. These pilots are not limited to the airlines; they exist in all realms of aviation.

Even non-commercial pilots can exhibit remarkable professionalism. When I was a newly certificated private pilot, my instructor encouraged me to be the best pilot I could be. He said that professional pilots do not wait until they are being compensated for their services to instill sound discipline and operational practices. I agree.

Fellow aviation professionals, let us strive for excellence. Keep up the good work.

Don't blame Steenblik. This isn't his style to write and not fact check. Blame the three man panel...all hand picked by "Dear Leader Prater" and headed by Sluys.

You can bet your paycheck that Marie Schwartz told him to "shut up and write" or look for another job.

This is a LOT deeper than this tool.

And Frog_flyer...on behalf of those of us who have legitimate "guido" blood...not that reality show NJ crap...leave us outta this! He ain't one of us!:yup:

Why has the "fallout" been disappointing?

I think that the reaction to the article by the community of professional pilots has been spot-on (zero tolerance for lack of truth and professionalism), and so far ALPA is indicating that they will be looking into it.

That's little melodramatic. I've worked with Marie Schwartz when I was on the SYX COMM committee an personally know John Sluys. They're honorable people and have been working on the betterment of our profession, hell, longer than many of us have been pilots.

I think the media group got burned by not fully fact-checking the subject. There are a lot of "Pencil-whipping Tomcatters" out there looking for notoriety and glory and our profession certainly isn't immune.

Shame on the failure to fact check, yes. But shame on Timothy Martins who is an outright ass for doing this.

I worked with her when we were building the CALALPA Strategic Preparedness committee. Absolutely great person and would not fault her at all here.

What happened is so far out of left field that the ALPA media guys just wouldn't believe that it was possible. The guy was vouched for by other pilots so why would they not take it at face value. Blame this Martins guy, not ALPA Communications.

Also, I'm sure that the EGL MEC is already starting Section Six proceedings.

update per base ops:
He has been taken off his trip and is on a paid suspension pending the completion of the investigation.

Wow. Just wow. I'd say more but I'd probably be carded by the mod squad. Which generally isn't good when you happen to also be a mod.

Of course, before he fled to France or floated another check on a callgirl he met at the hotel, a la "Catch Me If You Can".
