Embarasssing ALPA Magazine Blunder

Check your Arpil 2010 copy of AIR LINE PILOT. You have to have the physical magazine as they've removed pages 22 & 23 from the PDF you can read after logging in.

The removed article is called 'Mature Beyond His Years', ironically in the section called 'ALPA Code of Ethics: Role Model'.

In short, the regional FO profiled is a military poser who claimed to also fly F-16's in the Air National Guard. He also claimed to be a NY firefighter and paramedic. It's sad, but funnny.....but sad.

Haha I read the article last night, and as I was reading it I was thinking "geez when does this guy take a day off?" I got the email about it today from ALPA which was pretty vague, but does anyone know the full story?? Just your average regional FO who wanted to sound like he was superman?

We've got an ORD CA that pulls stuff like this.

Apparently he designed the windows in the Space Shuttle, among other things.

Weird, weird, weird.

I'm surprised there was no fact checking done on the article. Strangeness.

To All ALPA Members:
We have been advised by several sources that there may be misinformation, misstatements, or misinterpretations in the article "Mature Beyond His Years" published in the April issue of Air Line Pilot magazine.

We take these allegations very seriously, and we have begun an inquiry into the facts of this matter.

At the conclusion of this inquiry, we will take appropriate action to correct any inaccuracies.

Utterly embarrassing for ALPA. Especially considering the theme of the whole article, professionalism.

I'd say it reflects worse on the offending pilot than the organization as a whole. It's not like it's the NY Times failing to fact check.

Not sure how it works at ALPA Magazine, but a lot of magazines outsource to freelance writers.

Whomever wrote this is primarily responsible, but Editorial and their fact checker (if they have one) need to be taken to the woodshed if this proves to be true.

I believe he is the technical editor and makes a six figure salary...

His ex-girlfriend is an FO at Pinnacle. She was telling us ALL about this in the crew room a couple of days ago.

If the subject of the article was claiming to be a military officer, isn't that a crime punishable in court? (I sure hope it is...)

That really irritates me.

My girl is a formally-trained journalist - works as an editor. Fact checking is something taught in freshman journalism, for God's sake. And she makes a LOT less than that.

Based on what I'm reading on multiple forums, the military guys are really irked by this and many have said they will contact the proper authorities to deal with this. Some mentioned the FBI.

This is crap, especially to those of us who are/were fighter pilots, and are firefighters.

What an ass.

Just to clarify- you're a fighter pilot... AND a fire fighter.

Geez man, don't be greedy. Leave some women for the rest of us.

Also: Further proof that fighter pilots are hosers. Tada! ;)

He'll be here all week, folks. Try the veal.

if true, this is very sad. This is the type of stuff that you see on 60 minutes every few years. Impersonating an academy grad and an officer, mil pilot, firefighter, furloughed aca pilot. Who knows what the guy lied about just to get hired at eagle. This couldn't come at a worse time when this industry has been battered by the acts of a few unprofessional pilots. This entire new segment in the ALPA magazine about rolemodels and those that exemplify the ALPA code of ethics is due in part to the unprofessional acts of our peers. It is also the outcome of the FAA call to action on pilot professionalism by Administrator Babbitt and NTSB recomendation A-10-15 which calls for practices and standards of pilot professionalism from the 3407 accident. ALPA or not, if this is true this guy just single-handedly lowered the bar for all of the true professional aviators out there. Outside of the possible civil and criminal liabilities, the eagle MEC should remove him from the membership for violating the ALPA code of ethics for conduct unbecoming and bringing shame onto the profession.

:D. Haha!

Yeah, started out as a firefighter long ago, and still do it.

Of course, I'm only a former fighter pilot. Am helo mafia now. :)
