One last comment from me and then I'm out.
First, if you go to an office environment nowadays, you will find people using earbuds all the time. Sadly, with cubicles everywhere, that's the only way to keep the noise from your coworkers from driving you insane. Thank the Office Space mindset for that.
And no, it's not just people who just got a job out of college doing it. I've got a buddy who works as an attorney in a union that some of you may pay dues to (not ALPA). They do it.
So the perception of earbuds as unprofessional, while it may be prevalent here, is not necessarily the perception that the rest of the world has.
Second, if you are concerned about projecting a professional image to the public, believe me, backpacks, ear buds, and the like are far less harmful to that image than walking around with a shirt that fit you five years ago but now is bursting at the seams due to the increased mass of your body and pants to match. I see pilots wearing uniforms that look like they've seen more stains than Monica Lewinsky's dress and look as old. Earbuds and backpacks ain't got nothing on that.
Do what you want. If you think, earbuds make me look unprofessional, then don't use them. Most people either won't notice or won't care, but if you feel strongly about it, then don't.
