Delta to drop Memphis as a hub

DTW is as close to MSP as it is to JFK.

Also, PHL/DCA/CLT/LGA eh? :)

I'm not so sure any of the airways hubs will stay. DCA is safe but everything else is suspect. If I had to put money something closing it would be CLT, that place is just a connecting hub and a horrible airport.

I'm surprised that anyone is shocked about MEM.

Last time they tried a DCI-only "hub", it was DFW. You know what happened with that.

...they keep stuffing more flights and more gates into the E side. Place is ridiculous.
Sounds like AE at KORD. They're going to take away 3 gates, and increase the amount of flights into/out of the same area.... makes perfect sense...

I disagree. CLT is not a connect only hub. Way too much banking money in CLT. 2nd largest banking center to NYC. A USA/DAL would have sealed CLT's fate but an AMR/USA merger strengthens its future.

What about all the island flying, the Rio, Sao Paulo flights and international flights. I don't think they are going to stick around.

interesting, my pilot buddies are frantically searching to bail out of ORD for AE..unfortunately Republic's 46 175's are all planned (as of now)[the other rumored bases are MIA, DCA] to be based out of ORD...it is going to shred the 50 seaters...can't confirm this but that means a drastic downsize of AE at ORD...

You probably didn't see the memo that we got on the YX side from Davis. The flying is more than likely going to start out of PIT (possibly PHL) and they are planning on opening ORD in OCT. Not sure how they plan on staffing PIT when they can't get FO's to stay there. It will basically make that base even more uncommutable.

I know AE already has a displacement bid out of ORD to New York on the 700 because of the 175 flying.

I would think island flying will be reduced as would South America for obvious reasons. The major European destinations like LHR, BRU, CDG, etc. will stick around in my opinion as will the flights to high density places like the Bahamas and the Caymans. Plus Europe really doesn't account for a large amount of CLT traffic anyway.

I actually think PHL will suffer more than CLT because of JFK. Keep in mind that USAirways traffic in the mid Atlantic is historically pretty substantial and it has always competed directly with DAL through ATL. I don't see the new American being willing to concede that traffic to DAL nor do I see them pushing that traffic through MIA by way of additional direct flights to that hub...there's a TON of traffic that flies short distances to CLT from all over the Atlantic seaboard and interior just to do business in CLT with the finance industry. Completely different situation than MEM.

I think it is important to note these three VERY significant challenges to the 'new' American going forward...
.
1) They owe the Israeli government some were between 10-20 million. Will they pay? If they don't, they won't be allowed to fly there and lose out on an extremely lucrative route.

2) They really don't have that many destinations to Europe.

3) Last but certainly not least as this is their biggest disadvantage compared with Delta/United, no Pacific network.

cool thanks Dave, I have not seen that memo, either way it will be interesting

(I did run into the Dir. of Ops for RPA and he said MIA was a pretty viable option, this was about 2 months ago though, so i'm sure it's changed)

I was unaware of #1. Interesting. The last 2 are significant hurdles for sure (especially #3). What they do have going for them is a strong hub structure and a lot of widebodies.

Hold on a minute here...I agree about less Pacific network with 100% of it coming from the AA side with flights basically to NRT/HND/PVG/PEK.

But as for #2, I see: Athens, Frankfurt, Brussels, Rome, Zurich, Paris, Barcelona, Munich, Amsterdam, Madrid, Glasgow, Venice, Lisbon, Manchester, Dublin, Shannon, and London from PHL today. I think that's a fair amount to Europe.

Legacy Airways only has 29 wide bodies, yes 29. Also 10 of them are on the oldest 767s on the planet being ex-Piedmont birds. To compare, y'all have 29 more 767ERs alone.

Legacy American has 113 so if you add the two Legacy companies together that is a grand total of 142, which is 3 less wide bodies than y'all have. If you take away the 10 Piedmont 767s they have which I imagine are going to be going bye-bye in a short time, they have 13 less wide bodies than y'all have.

What gates are Eagle losing?
Did you ever find out what CP your GF talked to?

A lot of those flights from PHL are seasonal (correct me if I am wrong BobDDuck) and they are from PHL which has little O&D traffic to those places (less premium traffic). Their biggest competitors have flights year round to those places, more flights per day from more cities, and they flight to more places. If they are moved to JFK (which Delta won't allow) then yes, they may have less of a challenge competing with Delta/United, but as I don't see that happening, it is going to be a huge challenge for the new American.

Airways is also taking delivery of 5 more 330s in the next two years and starts getting 350s in 2017. So not as simple as saying they have 10 old 767s that they're retiring.
