It was barely a hub anyway...

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Delta Air Lines Inc. is dropping Memphis, Tenn., as a hub airport starting this fall.

The airline says the Memphis hub is not making money. It's cutting daily flights there to 60 per day from the current 96. It's also cutting 230 jobs.

The reductions begin on Sept. 3, right after Labor Day weekend and the end of the busy summer travel season.

The cuts are laid out in a memo from Delta executives to workers on Tuesday.

Most of the flying to be cut is on 50-seat regional jets, which Delta is phasing out.

Memphis was a hub for Northwest Airlines before it was acquired by Delta in 2008. Delta said at the time that it planned to keep all Northwest hubs.

I didn't realize it was actually still a hub. I thought they had shut that down last fall.

That's when it ceased to be a pilot base. There were still hub operations conducted with mostly RJ's as well as an FA base.

Ahh, I assumed an airport closing as a pilot base was synonymous with closing as a hub cf: Airways with PIT and LGA.

Back in 2000 there were over 300 daily by Northwest alone. I remember riding a DC10 from MEM to MSP several times. I was too young to realize just how special air travel still was in the 90s.

60 per day huh? How many of those gonna be to Atlanta, Detroit, and Minneapolis? Then, how many will be to Jackson, MS and Ft Smith, AR...? Lol

This is sad news. My aunt is a CSA for Delta in MEM, and it sounds like she'll be losing her job. She is seriously one of the nicest, most heart-warming people I know. Delta is losing a valuable asset with her.

I actually think it will be easier to commute to the DL hubs. I know MEM-DTW goes on the hub schedule with 5 a day starting early and ending late. That's vs. 4 between 8am-5:30pm now.

Time will tell I guess, it was known to be coming down the pipe.

Is MSP being scaled back as well? I always thought it was odd to have 2 cities in the midwest as hubs.

Airways has also put some money into PHL and quite a bit now is going into DCA. I'm a pretty big pessimist but even I'm not worried about them in the near term. CLT...been there lately...they keep stuffing more flights and more gates into the E side. Place is ridiculous.

Until it turns into yet another Southern outstation served by RJs. I still remember when Delta merged with NWA and gave the city the ole "Nothing will change, we PROMISE" pitch. Nice new parking garage, though. Here's hoping someone moves in to fill the gap. I know SWA is planning on ramping up operations a bit there, and I've dropped the hint a couple of times over here. Be nice for my parents to actually be able to USE non-rev benefits for a change....
