The one person I know that's never going to run out on me is ME. Through good or bad, thick or thin, easy or hard...I'll be there!

So, why not treat number one well?

Really, I'm not the self-centered, greedy bastard I seem to be. I'm a nice guy!

I am by no means saying that every 20 year captain should make two or three hundred thousand dollars, but if the airline industry is going to be reduced to RJ's and pilots that make $60,000 I will go find something else to do that gets me home every night for baseball games and graduation.

Yeah, I am pretty much getting to that point. I don't have a problem accepting that fact though. I am not one that will drag myself through the [censored] and bitch while doing it.

Re: 100 retirees tonight?

And another thing....

I am starting to see and appreciate the perspective that if I am going to bust my balls for a financially mediocre job in aviation, why not bust my balls for a job that pays much better in another field and own an aircraft which I can fly wherever I want whenever I want?

The point of flying an aircraft for a living for someone else is starting to really not appeal to me in many ways. Why take a hobby that I truly love and enjoy and let someone else stomp on it until there is nothing left of either of us?

Sometimes this is a phase I go through that is like a tidal wave, but it really has been getting worse as of late. I used to be all excited when I was hearing that these regionals were hiring and blah blah blah.... I don't mind having to work for what I have and put in my time like everyone else in line, but I just can't see why I am going to do it when all that is going to be left is a possible furlough or a 32% cut in salary and reduced benefits. That is a hell of a way to treat the employees that are the wheels of your business. Make the employees suffer for the administration's mistakes.....

Sounds like a weiner, whoops, I mean winner to me....

Re: 100 retirees tonight?

iowapilot,
don't be discourages-MAN- there are other sectors of the aviation field that you can join-ATC,Dispatch,Mechanic, Military, and so forth. If you are still in the early part of your college years-please go for an A&P or go for a different major before you emerse yourself into the glory of Aviation.

Re: 100 retirees tonight?

Those are the same thoughts that happened to me iowapilot. I still plan to train up to ATP and have a whatever happens happens mentality. I look at like this, flying is my crack habit and my 9 to 5 supports that habit
grin.gif

Plus, I would like most to be able to experience GA. So I am striving to buy my own plane and intruct, possibly even volunteering my time instructing for those passionate about GA but can't totally afford training. Gotta pass the torch

Do you think this is new? In the 30 years I've been in the business it has been exactly the way you just described it. Most of my friends worked at airlines that went out of business. In the early days I had friends who were furloughed annualy.

If you didn't have any better perspective on the industry than this you had no business pursuing it in the first place.

Get a clue. There is no industry you can go to, working for somebody else, that can guarantee you a job, or a pay level, or security for a career. The closest thing to it might be the government.

Nobody owes you a job. Every industry goes through up-cycles and down-cycles, period. If you want to work for a company where management is always right, start your own company. Remember that a lot of what is wrong at the legacies was whole heartedly supported by the workers. Expansion (huge debt), high costs (big contracts). Everyone in an industry has a responsibility to be a steward of that industry, not just management. It isn't just about what you can take from it, but also what you can contribute. That's true no matter where you decide to go.

If you want to fly airplanes for a paycheck then stop wringing your hands, get educated about the industry and make smart choices. If you are ambivalent about flying airplanes for a paycheck, then look somewhere else for the mythical secure career with perfect management. When you find it report back here, others will want to know.

Re: 100 retirees tonight?

I knew this post was coming. Thanks for the advice. I am just trying to sort things out. I really needed you to tell me no one owes me a job. Try reading my post in it's entirety before you get your panties in a bunch about owing anyone anything.

Re: 100 retirees tonight?

Maybe it's just me...but I don't know anybody that has a job that lets them "be home for baseball games" and also fly at their leisure "whenever and wherever they want".

Just about all of the people I know with good paying "corporate" type desk jobs are nowhere near able to be home for baseball games. The days of the 9-5 don't seem to exist anymore. When I was working I left my apartment at around 7AM and usually didn't get back until around 7-7:30PM on a typical day. A busy day meant around 9PM. Some weeks required Saturday work too. Let's not even mention the company cell phone which never stopped ringing whether I was at work or not!

The people I know who have those nice cushy schedules to get home early don't make near enough to afford to fly. Especially with a family and a mortgage.

Re: 100 retirees tonight?

Yeah, that probably is more the truth than what I said. I was just making a point for myself that it doesn't make much sense from what I am seeing now. I just have to sh#% or get off the pot.

Re: 100 retirees tonight?

uhhh.....yeah....we're gonna have to go ahead and have you come in on Saturday....yeah
