Delta opening new hire window?

The flip side of course is that just because you have all your ducks in a row, there is no guarantee you'll get a nod. Like Kellwolf, I attended the Open House at Blue. I had 4 LORs attached to my application. I had the required mins plus a whole lot more. I never heard a peep. Same story at SouthernJets (when they were actually still hiring). I had LORs attached. I went to two career fairs and shook hands with the dudes doing the hiring and passed across hard copies of my resume. Nada. Over at Virgin I had two fleet standards captains, a chief pilot and three line pilots walking my stuff in and it took THREE YEARS to get an interview (which I didn't make it through anyways!)

I'm not bitter about any of that. It's the way the game goes and I know I'll escape Regional Hell (tm) some day. I just want to point out that even if you network the hell out of a job, keep your app updated as possible and keep everything ready to go for the minute you get called, it may still not happen. But that sure as hell shouldn't stop anybody from keeping on trying.

You'll get there man. I've never met you, but the caliber of the people on JC who like you (and I assume know you personally) speaks a lot.

You do bring up a very good point though. I always find it amusing when I'm flying with a captain who lacks skills, a personality, or both and they're saying things that start with "when I get to Delta..." as if its a sure thing.

But then there's the guys who nobody likes flying with and suddenly they're gone. Really not much of a rhyme or reason to it.

Same with me and JetBlue...I never got a chance to go to the open house, but I have 3 internal recs over there. Zip, nada. Meanwhile, they just hired two Cape Air guys without a lick of turbine experience, one of whom I flew with when he was an FO. I ain't bitter! :)

From what everybody has told me, the Open House was a requirement to get an interview. The HR department over there used it as a screener to check your interest and to make sure you didn't have a third eye or were missing an arm.

Not necessarily. It helps, no doubt.

It'll happen BDD. I never called called by UAL (first choice at the time) and didn't succeed in my American (first round round in '97) interview but it all worked out in the end I think.

I know a guy who got an interview without it, though I'm sure it helps. That guy was (is?) an FO on the E170 at RAH. I think he had about 2500TT and 1000 turbine SIC when he interviewed. They seem to take a wide variety.

Anybody know how to find out when Delta has or attends recruiting events, open houses? It seems like I find out about these through word of mouth, but I heard there might be a way to get emails about this. I guess my Internet skills are rusty. Can't find specifics.

Good friend of mine got hired into the MD-11 at a company in Miami with an internal rec but less than 1000tt a little multi and no jet experience, nvm hvy jet... after the furloughs started in summer of 2009. Not a hater at all, he's a good guy and good friend and deserves it. Just gives me inspiration that anything (mmmmm Nicki Minaj) errr almost anything is possible. ;)

I think I know who you're talking about. Was furloughed from some regional, right?

And yes, anything is possible. Just have to make yourself available to the opportunities.

Here's the best kept secret if you want to work for Delta.

All of the open houses and career fairs are great, but you're still one of several hundred and, as much as I hate to admit this because I dabble in it myself, are unaffective for the most part.

This is how you do it:

Have your internal recommendation walk into the chief pilots office and arrange, IN PERSON, a "chief pilot review" when the window is about to open.

Generally, the CP, if you're highly recommended and someone goes through the "hassle" of arranging it, will call you in for a little "meet n greet, one on one, low stress low threat"

If he thinks you're a fit for the team, they'll call the hiring office and say, as chief pilot, to bring you in for an interview. I've had 100% success with this method -- but be absolutely certain your recommendation is on good terms with the CP office so that's a double test. He trusts your recommendation because he knows your work ethic. Got to meet you, review your application and HE will be one of your recommendations when he calls the employment office.

They have pull, big time.

That's the secret.

Nope, student and CFI bud of mine with a big internal rec... don't want to say more than that publicly, (PM me Ill give you to details) but he went from C172/PA44 straight to MD11 do not pass go or collect your RJ time. :D

I know who you are talking about. Nice guy was furloughed from ASA.

Lots of guys in the past couple of years didn't go to the open house. Did you go to one of the ones they did during that week long string back in 2010 (the invite only ones) or one earlier? I know that they said at the open house I was at they would call everyone that was there. It took over a year, but I finally got a call, and I know I wasn't the only one still waiting. Word on the street is the flood gates are about to open at Blue. With the staffing going to being slightly below norm, new deliveries and planned attrition, I can see 2013 being a big hiring year, especially if other majors start hiring in numbers.

I know someone that got the informal meet and greet with the CP at Delta. She was really excited, it went really well. She didn't even get an interview out of the deal.

You don't say! Thanks for the advice!

I don't know. I have had 4 hour jumpseat sessions on SWA where the pilots were seriously trying to sell the job to me. I take that as a good sign. For some reason I run into a block in my head where asking for contact info out of the blue just doesn't seem right after only a few hours.
