Delta Disqualifiers

I had about an hour chat with one of the chief pilots today.

There are a lot of misconceptions about the process being thrown around as "fact" in this thread.

Deciding whether to publicly share it or not. Hmm ;)
Hold that thought for a minute.

I'll set up a quick PayPal account, $5 per response (10% off the top for yours truly), and straight scoop info available for the hoi polloi.

What say you???

Edit to add: Crap! Typo!!! That should read $500.00!!!

I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, but absent any information to the contrary, it's a conversation like any other. I mean, yes, of course, if any particular employer institutes a selection process with which I disagree (or don't!), it's entirely their business, provided it doesn't discriminate on the basis of sex, race, national origin, etc. But I'm hard pressed to see that it's "whining" when someone observes that it seems a bit wrong.

Put another way, I don't think saying "Oh, wow, that's a shame, and doesn't seem to make a lot of sense from where I'm sitting" is tantamount to saying "MY RIGHTSES ARE BEING VIOLATED!" *shrug*

Absolutely, it's their company, run it however. Hire whoever. Just let me know when the shlubs are invited. Meanwhile, hope a good airline accidently invites and hires me.

I like money.

Nah, it's not about keeping secrets, it's just I generally write "stream of consciousness" and I'm not sure how much, if any at all, is proprietary.

I know a lot of you guys want to work here, I want you to work here too, but brotherman's got to keep his job.

And ultimately, the company wants what the company wants. People who want in are going to keep trying until they get in or until they find something better. Or they're going to give up because of rumors or many years of no results. The information, whatever it may be, could serve as nothing but a reason for people to give up really as hopeful applicants are applying either way.

Exactly. It's a game. I'm just not very fond of playing games at this point. It's not at all unreasonable to feel that your qualifications should stand on their own merit instead.

That's not really how life works though. Almost never, it seems. That's a good thing if you are motivated and hustle, and a bad thing for those who just want to sit back and "let their qualifications speak for themselves."

My Oh my. Where to start. Folks took a small snippet of information and dove off the cliff.

I urge folks to sit back and take a deep breath. Just because you haven't been called yet or your score is not high enough to be in tier 1 does not mean you are "disqualified"

Who said anyone was sitting back? I've been building heavy jet time for going on 5 years now. Same with many others.

Sorry, I don't feel WIA/OBAP participation trumps grit and hard work.

That wasn't an accusation or anything directed at you specifically.

You are building heavy time. Good for you, as you're increasing your experience and qualifications. But that's only half of the equation. You also have to network and find a way to get those things in front of the right people at the right time. That's all I was saying. You could be the most qualified pilot on the planet, but the guy with 1/2 your experience will get the job first if he networks/hustles better than you do. That's not trumping grit and hard work, it's acknowledging the fact that a career is based on more than just pure qualification.

Personally, I kind of like it that way.

Yup. I'm told that the fact I've worked for 4 carriers looks bad.

Of course, I was furloughed from my first one. Second, third, and fourth carriers have all been good, logical steps forward. And really, I've networked, worked hard, and downright clawed my way to a pretty good carrier in the process. If that looks bad, then I guess I'm truly not Delta material.

The working for multiple carriers looks bad rumor is completely and utterly false. So is the points for loyalty rumor. Any movement to further your career and quals is looked upon positively.

Leaving 4 carriers with less than a year at each with no two weeks notice looks bad. Your path will not negatively impact you at all.

Hopes this puts your concerns to rest.

I'm like @Alchemy, actually. I'm happy where I'm at, and frankly, just sick of changing jobs. I'm just calling it how I see it.

And trust me: 3 out of 4 airline jobs I've gotten were based on networking... I'm not advocating taking that out of the picture.

I just read the whole thread and what jumps out at me is the need to be at Delta. Any legacy job these days is a pretty good job. Take what you can get and once you've got it start worrying about whether there should be another step up. Limiting yourself to one airline can be career suicide.

I'm happy where I'm at too. It's a good feeling to have. I'm fairly certain a merger is going to come along and screw it all up someday. Lol
