My buddy got his CFI and had 300 hours about a year ago. Now he's working a 135 single job, has 1000 total, and is in line for a multi-135 freight company. Six months and he'll be interviewing at the regionals. He has no guaranteed interview...he doesn't need one.

He is in the "pool" with everyone else. Just check Airlineinterviews.com on COMAIR ( wich happens to be the largest regional and with the best pay out there ) You will see guys with 3000+ hours interviewing with 1000 hours DCA graduates.... Somehow your friend would not have the same chance with only 1700 hours...

Your estimate of 5 to 6 years to "make it" instructing and doing 135 freight is overstated, in my view. Two to three years locked into a program that pays CFI's $10/hr and guarantees you an interview doesn't seem like a great choice to me....but to each his own.

That is not what I said. I said 5 to 6 years from first flight lesson... Your friend started in 1999, it is now 2004 and that is 5 years.

Let's compare apples to apples. What was the date of your first flight as a student pilot, what was the date you got your CFI, how many hours do you have today, and what is your hourly pay. I'll ask my part 61 trained friend the same things and post back ASAP.

My first flight was in July 2002. I will be eligible to the interview by March next year... and that is because I taught ground school and accepted a group leader position that , albeit prestigious at DCA, will delay my eligibility by 3 to 4 months.

I have addressed this issue in another post.

Look, if you want to believe that DCA is a bad choice that is up to you. Some people agree with you and some don't. DCA Instructors are getting hired by Chautauqua , ASA, Sky West, COMAIR, Skyways and American Eagle among others... Will your friend get hired and have a successful career? By what you tell me here, I believe so and I wish him luck.
