Hurricane Ana missed us by about 150 miles yesterday (flying in weather with pilots and controllers who never get weather is an interesting experience), but we did get dumped on. There's thousands of waterfalls on the island that appear out of the Ko'olaus when there is a lot of rain so any stormy day is a good time to go chasing waterfalls. Of course lots of rain means flash flooding and most waterfalls are at the back end of narrow canyons. Fun times.
Anyhow Maunawili Falls is a very popular tourist hike on the windward side. The actual waterfall is relatively small (maybe 20 feet) but it's a pretty hike in and some (crazy) people like to jump into the pool below the falls. Beyond Maunawili Falls are the Maunawili Bigs, a series of chutes that come off the Ko'olaus that require a whole lot of rain to get going.
Today there was a whole lot of rain.
