Crazy/good flying skills

Younkin Airshows and Franklin airshows really do have some amazing acts. He was taught by Bobby Younkin and Jimmy Franklin, before they were lost in their accident.

As far Kent's routine, I've actually helped him set up his airplane before one of his acts. He has a metal plate on each wingtip to keep it safe, but the fabric really is pretty torn on the tip. When making his aileron "fall off" he uses a fake one with a pull line attached to it that he has in the cockpit with him. He then puts bags of flour on each side to make the wing scrapes look more dramatic. He actually puts a "hit it here" line with sharpie on his bag, its pretty funny. The tire that he throws out is just a big rubber tire that will bounce and roll to make it a bit funnier for the crowd to see it bounding down the runway.

His act really is amazing, I dont know how he makes that plane do what it does. It really is a true testament to his flying skill. And yes, I think its one of the most underrated acts in the airshow industry today also.

That was good stuff thanks for sharing.

I saw this guy perform at the Dallas Airshow in October.

When his aileron fell off, I actually thought he was going to crash, not knowing it was part of the act.

A dead stick landing on top of an RV was cool as well.

I seen this guy at an Air show in SD. He totally amazed me. Low level spins that I thought for sure was gonna put it in the ground.

Wow Just Wow, that has to be the most blantantly unsafe/illegal thing i have ever witnessed. I realize it's an act and they guy wasn't really a drunk man from off the street, but still... I really think the FAA need to step up and regulate the airshow industry. Some of the things I see should never be tried. EVER. It doesn't matter how "good" you think you are.

You're just upset about it because you don't like fun and airplanes...

Is this directed at me? If so, then no. I am upset because that kind of crap can end up killing people. If you want to have "fun" then have it in a safe manner. Namely away from airplanes.

Every airshow I've been to has had at least A fed there.

Ask Hoover about that. He was only twice as good as most of us, and still got his medical yanked.

Although I do agree about the parts falling off the airplane thing....

I agree completely with this. In fact, all flying except 121, 135, 137 and flight training should be stopped altogether. And no taildraggers except 137 guys either. Air Shows, Air Races and the rest are just risky and use lots of fuel that will warm the earth anyway.

Absolutely amazing. I know there is an insane amount of rehearsal for that, but I really feel bad that there will be an RIP someday for that stuff too. Pretty scary. Just my $.02.

Uh, they DO regulate the airshow industry.

The FAA has granted the pilot a waiver to do his act. The FAA is on site overseeing every airshow where he flies.

maybe they do, but if that guy ever were to step foot in a plane as a PIC, then the FAA isn't doing enough...

Well, we should go ahead and stop NASCAR, Football, pole-vaulting, diving, and gambling because people all die from those too.

If you want to have "fun", then do it however you do it, but for crying out loud, do not think you should have the power to tell other people how or how not to have fun.

I'm pretty sure Mr. Franklin and Younkin are well aware of the risks that they put their lives at. Both of them have lost their fathers due to this type of "fun".

Indeed it was directed at you, however I was presuming you would recognize the tongue in cheek nature of my response. In reality, we're talking about a highly trained professional who has spent a lot of time practicing and mitigating risk by carefully choreographing the routine.

Then again you may be entirely correct. We could use a man such as yourself, butt, as the next FAA administrator to eliminate all of these silly hazards.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Are you truly retarded? Getting certified to be in the airshow industry might be one of the most difficult standards to reach in aviation. The amount of training and time they have to go through to even be considered for an ACE evaluation is ridiculous. Do you think that all "scary" things should be shut down? Lets shut down driving also, we should all just walk everywhere again because people die from that too.

Bob Hoover, one of the best pilots of ALL TIME, did a routine in a multi with the engines off and did a full sequence at airshows, is that too dangerous too? Should he have not been allowed to fly?

Do you know what one of the most popular forms of aviation was in the past? The thing that really got aviation going? Barn storming, should they have not done that too cause it was too dangerous?

People like you really make me angry, you literally have no idea what you're talking about.

I agree. I mean shoot, that other stuff is just too dangerous.

What is some newbie clicks on this thread and sees that video and everybody praising it? That person may get the wrong idea that doing that sort of thing is OK. If that newbie were to crash or something, then we would be partially responsible.

And to answer your question, no the barnstormers should have not done that. Maybe i'm in the minority here, but I dont think people should do unsafe things in planes. Might just be me though...

Where did you get the crazy idea that flying was safe?

Because it's not. It is a very dangerous activity that will end disasterously if any number of things go wrong. Many of the potential disasters are completely out of the hands of the pilots.

Furthermore, please define "unsafe". If I flew over fields at 10 feet it would be "unsafe", but when T-cart does it it's another day at the office. The difference is that he is properly trained. Training for airshow acts is very long and intensive.

That said, flying down the runway on one wheel is actually something that every student pilot can do (normal crosswind landing). Even if he does screw it up, he is only moving at 30-40 MPH and any accident will be very mild.
