Crazy/good flying skills

The only thing about the Air Races I don't like is the fact they take these beautiful warbirds (Bearcat, Mustang, etc) and chop/clip them up as ugly race planes. Blasphemy!

Agreed! I hate seeing those airplanes cut down and painted up like a bigger girl going out on the town. Of course I wouldn't say no if the offer came to fly one.

The air races were also a much bigger deal back then. I'd love to see pylon racing make a comeback and hold more events than just Reno. Hell, we have Redbull Air Racing! I admire those pilots for their skills and abilities, but I'm not so convinced about the series in general.

I mean people watch NASCAR, why can't we get them to pay stupid amounts of money to see that in the air?

I think that as long as they are running R-3350's, R-2800's, R-4360's, Merlins, Griffons and the like you won't see more stops other than Reno. The extreme cost of just doing an unlimited for Reno is more than many can bare - witness Rare Bear for a number of events.

Now...a sport class with cheaper motors? The Falconer V-12 and perhaps other designs - then yeah, maybe you could have more events. I think that the fact that we have had the SR-71, the X-15, etc kind of limits the appeal of racing now (for the general public) as opposed to the 30's. In the 20's and 30's, those airplanes were THE fastest machines of their time - they were the SR-71's then and had the absolute speed records. Today, you certainly wouldn't set the "fastest thing that flies" record, and therefore would limit interest from the non-aviation public compared to the 30's.

Waco, I totally understand the cost situation, but as far as public interest due to the absolute speed records being unattainable... what about auto racing? LSR racing has what I would consider to be a very small following. Exempting that, Formula 1 is, hands down, the fastest form of racing on four wheels. Hardly anyone pays attention to it here in the U.S., but they sure love their NASCAR, which happens to be slower and less technologically advanced. What they do have, is an exceptional marketing program and that's how I think they get the majority of their viewers.

Yeah...but most people can relate a little to car racing...because we all drive...maybe that is it?

air races? aerobatics? dangerous stuff? Can't believe it took me this long to chime in on this thread.

Ban it all I say. Flying, even in an educated and highly trained way, should never be fun. Nor should we promote and aviation to the general public or excite them about it through airshows. Down with airshows, Down with GA.

:sarcasm:

I'm really upset now, I'm going to go flat spin an extra, that always makes me feel better.

You're dangerous Maverick!

Antiques too...they should all be static displays in museums. I can't wait for the day that I never have to hear the noise polution of a radial or V-12. Only horizontally opposed and turbines...what a great day that will be!

ugh, radials. obnoxious.

I dont know who these jerks were, turning fuel into noise, at 6am on a saturday...someone should write them up! this is just the kind of thing we need to put a stop to.

oh man someone needs to get those N#'s a report those people...they are a bunch of dangerous hoodlums, who should not be flying, and Talia should be reported for her negligence in posting a video on a forum where some student might see it and go climb in a T-6 and try it and kill themselves!
shame...wow, just wow.:insane:

p.s. Talia, I'm still jealous!:D

The answer is clear to me now...We must ban Talia from aviation. She represents everything that caring, decent people should be against, aviation-wise. We must stop the madness!!!

MikeD, Waco, OhioStatePilot, what are you thinking?!?!

Cutting up those warbirds is the best thing to do, cause we all know those aren't safe!!! Cut them up, make them into pieces, nobody should be flying those things. And air racing? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? YOU MUST BE INSANE. STOP ALL OF THIS.

Talia, don't you flat spin that extra, or enjoy flying those radials! Thats too dangerous!

Just for all of that, I'm going to go do formation aerobatics this week.

That is all.

I regret to inform you that you're next. The evidence is your avatar itself. If you feel the need to display such an unsafe aircraft, complete with fabric covering, an environment-destroying round engine, and an obviously poorly maintained nose gear (the mechanic even placed it in the wrong location!!), then you have no business in the midst of the conscientious, safe aviators on this board!

:D

Wow Just Wow, that has to be the most blantantly unsafe/illegal thing i have ever witnessed. I realize it's an act and they guy wasn't really a drunk man from off the street, but still... I really think the FAA need to step up and regulate the airshow industry. Some of the things I see should never be tried. EVER. It doesn't matter how "good" you think you are.

quit flying.

No way, he's logged over 9000 hours since his first JC post in 07. He's a guy you want in the cockpit!

Fine. Then people should never: race fast cars, jump motorcycles, attempt to shoot rockets into outer space, create nuclear fusion.... you know, because someone might get hurt.
Don't forget staple paperwork. Those staplers are heavy after a long day of work.

I need to know where the FAA was for this. These people are a menace to society and need to be heavily regulated! We need safety studies!
