Copying United

If a plane is ETOPS certified, does that mean that it can glide a farther distance with a dual engine failure? I'm just wondering why the planes that go to HNL have to be ETOPS.

Pretty complicated, but no it doesn't change gliding distance. ETOPS is a combination of a maintenance program to verify certain things are checked before each flight, as well as some limits to ensure the airplane can get back to an airport within a reasonable amount of time. Fuel requirements are much different as well. Multiple "what if" scenarios are ran by dispatch for each flight and you end up carrying the worst case scenario fuel (i.e. lose an engine and also have a rapid decompression right at the halfway point and have to fly back at 10,000ft on one engine.)

Well, it seems that Seggy is ODing on newbie juice at United, and doesn't realize that Delta, American, United, they're all the same in the end. No one carrier is any better than the other. One day he'll realize, no one really cares.

That's what I tell people that are saying "I only want to go to Delta because they're the best!" They absolutely are right now. But when I was hired in '07 they most definitely were not. Most people looking to get on with a major are looking at 20-30 years left in this career, lots will change.

There are two things you should look for in my opinion: 1) An airline that hires you and 2) IF given a choice, find the pilot group where you fit in best. Good years, bad years, and everything in between, the thing that will make your career better is working with good people.

I know that.

What you seemed to forget was that if they are all the same, there is no 'copying' as you alluded to in another post :).

ETOPS certified aircraft can maintain a cabin altitude of 8000' or less while under 300' of water. They also have a special door so a rescue submarine can retrieve the PAX

Just like UAL is "copying" DAL's fleet strategy with the used aircraft acquisitions (A319's) and the upcoming 100-seat decision/order.

At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is the bottom line - which method you choose to skin the cat is (fairly) irrelevant, as long as it gets the job done.

At least no one has taken a non-ETOPS Airbus to Hawaii yet...

:)

That captain was on my jumpseat a couple weeks back, I asked in passing if anything came of that incident because he said he was same company/airframe so I thought he might be in the know. When he told me it was him and gave me the background on the whole thing it was pretty interesting.

Didn't USAirways and JetBlue have the 190's prior to Delta? Who copied whom?

Who cares?

I think you missed my point -- nobody cares who did what first, nobody is "copying" anyone else. If it works for the bottom line, carriers can and should be doing it. The bottom line doesn't care who did "what" first (save for a few extremes).

Correct though, US and JBLU had E190s first - albeit ordered new, rather than used, and for slightly different fleet/network purposes.

You will be met with holy water and crosses next time you set foot in the ATL crew room.
Sitting here right now. Some dude is snoring in the corner. Some guys watching football. Management is not in the house. Haven't seen a CP since the 25th.

All my years as a JC member and airline pilot, and I still haven't gotten the community language down pack yet! Y'all are hilarious!
