How can the interviewer evaluate skills?

[/ QUOTE ]

Skills not listed is a big no-no anyway, that should be there. As much as people lie about skills they lie about education.

[/ QUOTE ]

I have no doubt about that....it's actually against the law here to lie about a degree to get a job....moot point, though.

If the only thing I have to go by is the degree, I'm going with the degree. If you're too silly to go to school for four years and get a degree, I really don't care what experiences you have.

That's just me, though....

Lots of posts have gone under the bridge. My reply to you is this.

Go to "any" job site for any pilot position and read them.

99.8% will say 4 yr degree required. That is the bottom line.

What we think dosen't matter. Smart, stupid degree or not. There is no degree that will make you a better pilot than anyone else. Pilots are "made" through experience.

The degree is a 20 horsepower weedeater thats all. Without it your chances of being weeded out in the initial review are way up there.

If you want to be the first to go now's your chance. Without a degree you will[ most likely ] be the first to go.

Re: College Degree needed for Commerical Airline P

And even if it says "preferred" let me tell you what that means. If you don't have one, you're going to the bottom of the pile. What's the ratio of applicants to hires? Something like 20 to one?

Guess who isn't going to be that one.

This proves my point. College is not for education, or illumination anymore, just to "Get a Job."

Thank God I have not had a job since Sep 11, 2001!

College IS for education and illumination if that's what YOU want to get out of it. College is an OPPORTUNITY for a student to truly educate, illuminate and develop his or her mind if the student is motivated to do so. The thirsty mind will seize the opportunity, but the cynical mind will not appreciate the opportunity, nor will it benefit half as much. For better or for worse, each mind will emerge with the same diploma, so we have come full circle and it is once again left up to the individual to reflect on their motivations for going to college and proceed accordingly.

My humble opinion.

Most of what I learned in college I have had to "unlearn" in these last few years. I went to a Liberal Arts college. I was taught the following from either classes, professors or college administration:

1) God is completely subjective and personal, there are no absolutes.
2) College Education is a RIGHT and should be paid for by the gov't
3) Women need to be told they are not only equals, but superior in some areas (??????)
4) Science is fact. Creation is myth.
5) Rich people are evil and there money needs to be taken from them and given to poor people.
6) Minorities are oppressed in todays society. Minorities are: Black, Indian, Hispanic, "Asian", Women, Homosexuals, etc etc etc - basically about 85% of the world's population is a minority. ????
7) The world is over populated and if we don't stop having children we will all die.
8) The world is polluted and we can't cut down any more trees or drive cars. If we do we will all die.
9) Conservative Republicans only want to rule us by force and will nuke us if we don't.
10) Business is all about Mgt vs. Labor, or Evil vs. Good.

and #11 - Even though the gov't should pay for education, I should send back 2X my tuition in the next 5 years to my college.

etc.

Re: College Degree needed for Commerical Airline P

Yes, John, we all know it's liberal brainwashing.

Whatever. Bottom line is that the market -- I thought people like you valued the market, John -- puts a value of a million bucks on a college degree.

And if you want a job as an airline pilot -- as most of the people here do -- you need a college degree.

That's the bottom line.

I don't think rich people are evil...lol. I do, however, think that they should indeed be taxed significantly to help fund the system.

This is a common misconception. Very few philosophers, and probably none worth their salt, will ever say that there are no absolutes. Many undergraduates get that impression because they read every other word in their philosophy texts, and listen to about every 5th word in class. In actuality, most philosophers agree that there [image]is[/image] an objective reality (absolute, if you must), but the problem is that we have no means of knowing it, or perhaps even understanding it.

Relativism is perhaps the most untenable position in existence, but many people come away from an undergraduate philosophy/political science/psychology class believing it. Just because there are many different moral systems out there (descriptive claim), that doesn't mean that any or even one are correct (normative claim).

Anyway, my hijack is over now...continue...lol

I'm sorry that you feel your college experience was a waste. My first college experience was at a private, Jesuit school in a Honors liberal arts program. There was no sense of brainwashing, but there was emphasis on critical reading and thinking skills, evaluating arguments and points of view, writing clearly and pursuasively, speaking skills, etc. This has laid the foundation for subsequent learning and my life in general. They have helped me put coursework into perspective and take some things with a "grain of salt."

I think some of these skills are important to employers, hence an empahsis on having a degree (although a degree does not necessarily guarantee that one has attained proficiency in any of these areas).

Lloyd how can someone be equal but superior in some ways?

Are we speaking english?

I think most reasonable people would say, "Women are at least equal to men in most regards, and superior to men in some." That is a clear, succinct, and non-contradictory way of saying what you said you had to "unlearn" earlier.

Re: College Degree needed for Commerical Airline P

There are ways to make the relavitism problem make more sense and actually apply it the way I think it's intended to be applied. When I write it all out I'll give some examples, though I'm sure there are philosophers out there who have already done so, I've never read them (though in honesty I have not read much at all yet).

Re: College Degree needed for Commerical Airline P

I believe in the concept of equality - as far as it comes to opportunity. Still, there are physiological differences between all people, regardless of sex.

There are [/i]tendencies[/i] across the sexual barrier. For example: Men tend to be larger and stronger. Women tend to reach physical maturity at earlier ages. The average adult man is approx. 5'10" and 175 lbs, where the average woman is 5'5" and 135 lbs. (These are numbers from several years ago, they may be different today.)

One very intersting statistic is about intelligence. The mean intelligence across the gender line is essenially equal, right around 100. However, the sigma value is another story. The standard deviation is much higher for men. I think women will agree that there are more intelligent men, but also - many more morons!

... and some days I think all the morons are here
