Changes to FAA written test

I took the FOI yesterday and failed with a 68%. I felt like I was getting tested on my reading comprehension abilities instead of my knowledge of the subject. I missed questions covering basic subjects that I know well such as acute fatigue, maslow's hierarchy of needs, the domains of learning, question types and characteristics, and others that I can't think of. I've been studying with my CFI, the AIH, the dauntless I-phone APP, and the jeppessen Flight Instructor Manual and none of them adequately prepared me for the test. Congrats to those that have taken and passed the FOI, and to those that haven't taken it memorize every word and detail of the AIH.

Uggghhh. Sorry to hear you had a hard time with it. I am so very not looking forward to taking this thing. Really wish the FAA would get their act together on this.

Yes sorry to hear about the test for ya. I have been using the ASA Test Prep with the updates. I have been taking a practice test from friday night atleast one a day and have scored 92-94% on all of them. I will continue this through out the week and hope for the best. I am taking it saturday morning at 9 a.m. Let you all know how it goes for me, good or bad!

I took the commercial written this morning. There were no updated questions. I was actually a little disappointed since I was hoping I'd maybe get a new "experimental" question regarding WAAS or something. I used the King DVDs. Scored a 100%, which includes lucky guesses on one or two questions. If you take good notes and do at least three practice tests then you won't be surprised by anything on the test.

Congrats! Good to know the preps are still working!

I took mine today as well. No Suprises and I scored an 88%(I was aiming for a nything from an 80 up).

Saturday is approaching fast!! Getting worried about this dang FOI test. lol Just can't wait to get it out of the way.

As much as I think the Sheppard Air system is usually kinda cheating ... has anyone tried it for the new FOI? It seems like folly to feed the testing centers, if you know the material and the problem is legitimately the test.

Hey, if it makes you feel better I got a 72%. Just barely passed. And do you know what I did for a living before I started chasing this silly aviation dream???? I was a high school teacher. Yup, that's right, professional educator turned pilot, and I barely passed the new FOI. I even went to graduate school for teaching education. So yeah, FOI, it sucks. Chock full to trick questions and contradictory to the subject matter which it is supposed to be testing you on.

Since you were a teacher already could you not exempt the FOI test?

Well I took the FOI Test this morning and I PASSED!! 88%. I used the 2011 test prep certified flight instructor book and used the prepware test program on the computer for practice tests. I study with these for about two weeks then took the exam. I did seem different questions then the study book had, I noticed the questions were worded different and the answer bank used slightly different words in around 10 questions on my exam. Overall, score atleast a 90-98% on practice exams and you should pass. I am going to try and study this week for the airplane instructor exam and maybe take it this coming saturday.

61.185...let's look at it carefully...

(b) The following applicants do not need to comply with [the fundamentals of instruction knowledge requirements in] paragraph (a) (1) of this section:
(1) The holder of a flight instructor certificate or ground instructor certificate issued under this part;
(2) The holder of a current teacher's certificate issued by a State, county, city or municipality that authorizes the person to teach at an educational level of the 7th grade or higher; or
(3) A person employed as a teacher at an accredited college or university.

There's your answer. It's got to be current. Just like a CFI certificate, teaching certificates have an expiration date. To renew is costly and time consuming. I heard that recently they removed some of the faulty questions from the FOI (or AOPA said they did) which is great and hopefully the truth! Overall, I think the test needs some massive changes, but that's just me. Congrats on the good score, way to go!

Thanks for posting the reg. I didnt know it had to be current!! A good pilot is always learning !! Thanks! and good luck with the training.

Does anybody know what I would show the examiner for number (3) to be except from the FOI?

Which test prep software were you using for the FOI? I need to make sure that I don't fail that test again. I'm taking the FIA thursday so I'll let you know if I have any issues with it.

Hi guys,
I´m european JAA ATPL pilot and I am going to travel next week to USA to do the FAA ATP. Has anybody prepared it with the Sheppard Air software recently? Is it still working properly and is it enough to pass the written?
Thanks

I saw you posted here and in ATP sub forum. Just get Sheppard Air ATP prep and be done with it. There is a thread in the General forum of several recent uses of their prep with all high 90s scores.
