Changes to FAA written test

so all in all, which is the best software to use for the FOI?

As others have said, the best study material is the AIH itself. However, similarly as others have said (myself included) the test is more a test on semantics and and specific wording / passages in the AIH. There's no real way to study for that...just take the test, and read every question a few times over, no matter how much you think you have the answer. They are rife with trick questions (even including questions about writing trick questions!)

As for 3rd party materials, I'm using Dauntless for the FIA, and their updates (which include the FOI) are very frequent, so that's promising.

Took the commercial airplane and passed with an 87. Recognized most of the questions but there were a few that I don't remember seeing in the ASA prep book. I could've missed seeing those questions since I only read through the book once as well so take it with a grain of salt.

Im geting around 95% on all the practice tests with the asa prepware. Did you just do the practice tests or also study the foi book? thanks

My method was to go through about 50 questions per sitting. First I had the prepware show me the questions and the correct answers only (go to settings). Then, after a few sittings worth of that i started taking the practice tests. I continually was getting 88% but i dont know, somehow on the real thing I bumped up to a 92%. As Nick will tell you, I had begun studying for the test the old fashioned way (with a freakin book) but after about 4 chapters worth i decided that nothing was being retained and hearing everyone say that the test was more about word choice than actual concepts/ideas/etc. I figured i'd rather spend the money and get this garbage over with. I should probably return that book now that i think of it....Good luck.

Nick, thanks! Cant believe i forgot to PM you about that haha.

cool thanks, yea i made it to chapter 5 in the book and also realized i was just wasting my time lol
Have you by any chance taken the FIA test yet?? if so how did that go if you dont mind me asking?

Have not. My goal is to become a CFII first so I might wait a little bit until i get into that. I guess that's the good thing about the ASA prepware, itll just keep updating. :)

I just used the Sheppard Air CFI Test prep package. I got a 96% on the FOI and had seen ALL the questions before. I got a 91% on the FIA because I ran out of time (only had Saturday morning/Sunday afternoon to study) to do the whole study strategy, I'm sure if I followed it for the FIA, I would've gotten in the high 90's. I can't recommend it enough! It was a tad bit more expensive for the 3-pack, but TOTALLY worth it. N519AT used it for his CFI stuff too and he was up near 98-100% on both tests.

I have herd good things about Shppard Air, I am going to purchase this to use for the FIA test. ASA test prep was around 40 bucks or so.

It is Mac compatible and that's what I used it on. The program looks pretty barren compared to Dauntless' program, but that's what they wanted. It's sole purpose is to give you the questions and proper answers in the most efficient way possible. I got the $100 3-pack and I'm going to knock out my CFII written as soon as I take my CFI check ride. To add on to my previous post, I finished the FOI in 8min and got a 96%, so it's just like the good 'ol FOI days. My FIA test took about 30min and I didn't do as well as I had hoped, but that was my own fault. Can't recommend Sheppard enough.

haha awesome. Smartest thing I've done in aviation yet, was to take take my CFII written at the same time as my instrument.

Just took FOI and FIA this morning. Passed FOI with a 92% i used asa prepware and recognized most of the questions, some were worded differantly and were a little confusing, but asa prepware is deffinatly the way to go. FIA was ok recognized alot of the questions, at least 10 questions regarding endorsments, lots of questions on commercial manuevers and ground ref manuevers, as well as slips and skids.

Great. Glad to hear that. I'm about to use the FIA disc to start studying this week. How'd you do on that one?

I got an 86 on FIA, it was the endorsments and the weight shift problems that really got me, iv never bothered to memorize the formula so i just guessed on those lol and i had about 4 of them i would say. I also always get confused with all the slipping and skidding questions which there were at least 6 of. wx was about ten or so questions. Either way if you study the asa you will def be good to go, i was more afraid of messing up FOI so i really didnt spend to much time preparing for the FIA. I would say 85% of the questions i recognized.
