CFII Bust

I just busted my CFII oral. I'm pretty bummed right now, I've never came close to busting an oral before. It started out ok, I was a little shaky on a couple of things, but nothing out of standards. Then came anti icing/deicing. I knew all about the seminole's anti icing and deicing, and how it doesnt have any airframe or propeller capabilities. He wanted me to explain them for other aircraft and I figured this was instructional level knowledge, I didnt want to just"shoot from the hip" so I admited not knowing and told him I was going to reference the PHAK. Thats when he took a deep breath, thought to himself for a couple seconds, and told me he would have to end the exam there. I wasnt expecting this at all, and I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience on a checkride. Thanks

Sorry man.

Not too sure about the way he treated you.

It's almost like he could have asked you about the deicing systems of a damn B76, or A340 if he really wanted to.

Not cool in my book.

Good luck on the re-do.

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything;

But thats a PTS item

Flight Intsructor Instrument PTS:
II. AREA OF OPERATION: TECHNICAL SUBJECT AREAS
A. TASK: AIRCRAFT FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS AND NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT

3. Anti-ice/deicing and weather detection equipment and their operating characteristics to include—
a. airframe.
b. propeller or rotor.
c. air intake.
d. fuel system.
e. pitot-static system.
f. radar/lightening detection system.

Sorry you busted the ride, if thats the only area you were weak in then it should be a pretty easy retake.

One of the best things to do with the PTS is to read it cover to cover a week before your ride so you can find those "oh **** I have no idea about that" items (or to make sure there aren't any of "those" kinds of items).

Should you have had a basic understanding of the kinds of anti/deice systems that exist? Yeah. Was he over-strict for not allowing you to reference any material? Depending on how you were doing up to that point...it was probably too strict.

No big deal man. Study up on that, be ready for the rest of the oral, and get through your retake :rawk:

:yeahthat: Straight up

2 days, 2 hours flight accelerated enough for ya? I go to ATP, the accelerated pace is fine untill you start the CFI's. I also reread that PTS, stupid mistake not fully reading the objective when i was studying. And it wasnt the only thing, just the last thing that did me in for the bust.

Yeah, but common sense dicates that is for the a/c used for the test. If you're using a 172SP or something, why go into a detailed discussion regarding what onboard radar is going to pick up? I bet the DE would be unable to explain how the wx radar on a 787 works and/or what its limitations are, so should you?

Now, if the DE wants you to explain how to determine if there is convective icing along the route, how to teach a freezing level chart, etc. - that'd be fair game for somebody taking the test in a fair wx airplane like a cutlass/arrow, etc. After all, somebody flying an airplane like that will have to make decisions based upon that kind of data.

Just remember, it pays to research who the DE is. If they're asking BS questions, you need to know before the test - not after.

I agree that its a PTS item but I have always been told that if you arnt sure dont B.S. Say you arnt sure and look it up. its about knowing where to reference and when to. My FAA examiner for my CFII said he was happy to see me looking things up. Said he didnt know how many times he had Applicants show up with a ton of books but never crack them open.

Pretty lame bust if you ask me. ( on examiners part) but maybe since you are ATP hes being harder. who knows.

Since when was common sense a part of the PTS?:banghead::buck::)

The aircraft I used on my CFII ride had no de-ice/anti-ice equipment at all, yet I was asked about all of the systems listed in the PTS.

One does not need to know the specifics of the bleed air system on a 777 to be able to explain the concept of a heated wing.

Was this with a DPE or a FAA Inspector?

Your plane didn't have pitot heat, cabin heat defrost, or heated static port?? Don't forget that those are deice/antiice equipment...

well in my opinion he was being really picky. I took it with the FAA, granted mine was really laid back... but he didnt pull anything like that.
