Captains! PLEASE preflight your jumpseats!

AA is terrible for jumpseating. I'm hoping they can adopt the USAir way of doing it, but getting them to chAAnge is unlikely.

I think it's going the AA way. I've been told the AA guys are really putting their feet down about the seniority J/S thing. While I do like the reservation system I think they do have a point. With the horrible non-rev policy that was implemented there really is nothing seniority to travel anymore. Also the reservation system has seen an uptick in abuse in the last year or so.

They did that under the "adopt and go" merger policy to get it done ASAP. I think almost all of us fully expect to go back to the way Airways was doing things after the SOC is had in spring of next year.

From what I've heard AA is taking a few things from the US side as well. The way the f/a closes the doors and tells the cockpit "seated and stowed" is now going into the AA book. I don't know how adopt and go this whole "adopt and go" policy is going.

One thing I heard last week is that in RC9 the overseas flights won't have to plot anymore or do any kind of pre-flight work. It will all go to dispatch which is where i think it belongs anyway.

Rather than piss off a section of the pilot group, why don't we piss off the whole group and develop something that uses the best of both worlds.

I would love to see a reservation system stick around, but allow it to respect seniority up until a certain time. Have a system that starts 7 days out that respects seniority up until 24-36 hours to departure time, then revert to first come first served. If you know you need to get somewhere and you have 7 days to list and you wait until the last minute, you deserve to not get the jumpseat if someone junior has it already reserved.

Yes because seniority doesn't count for anything at all. Nope. Not for bidding, vacation, upgrade, equipment, base, etc.

AA has never been seniority based for travel, this is nothing new to them.

I'm still kinda blown away the majority of AA guys don't want a reservation system. It only benefits the #1 guy at the entire company.

I got a APA Dc rep update and they were hopeful for a hybrid system. I'm hopeful.

I was speaking originally about the way AA gate agents deal with jumspeats and the pre listing and all that bull. I hope that goes away.

We have FCFS in the back, they think having both the front and back fcfs isn't fair. I'm starting to see why they think this way, seeing the abuse of the reservation system lately I can only imagine how infuriating it is to be a 30 year guy and getting screwed.

I am a big proponent of FCFS on the jumpseat. Why would you want it any other way? Commuting is commuting. Everyone is equally desperate. With a seniority based jumpseat, senior guys get to show up at the last second and bump someone. Even with a reservation system, you will have senior pilots abusing the system. This will result in even more uncertainty in the commuting game, which let's face it is already pretty nerve wracking.

My opinion:
Company trumps non company
FCFS otherwise

Common sense courtesy should apply, obviously.

How are people abusing it?

Lots of abuse lately on booking multiple listing or "squatting" a j/s.
You're allowed to. One Pri1 and one Alt. That was my understanding.

A simple tech upgrade in the system could fix multiple Pri1 listings.

Not sure what squatting means. Booking and not going? What are the circumstances?

There has been an uptick in people booking 4+. The squatting is groups of people booking multiple jump seats "holding" them for friends.

Wow I've never heard of that..... That would be hard to fight too I would imagine.

Since this was brought up on another thread, I've started to do the gate walkaround before push. Someone in the thread brought up a good point. Instead of spending that 30 minutes boarding sitting in the cockpit, get up for a strech and get the blood flowing a little.

That's BS if I saw that I would call the union on the guy so they could "talk" to him

Thank you to the SWA CA who insisted that my husband get on the flight from LAS despite the protests from the gate agent about weight and balance. It made for a happy ending to NJC rather than a stressful travel event.

SWA guys have always been super good about making me feel welcome. Way above and beyond the call.

Not sure how people are having issues with AA. I've had nothing but great experiences at AA, DL (when we had it), SWA, and B6. It's mostly good at UA, but I have had issues at times.

They convert the U.S. side to captains giving the take off PA because, well, FO's don't know how to make PA's and the captain has nothing better to do while taxiing than give a PA?
Sometimes, it's true that First Officers do NOT know how to give PAs.

Then they become Captains, and they still don't know how to give PAs.

I got over my mic fright on my first day of IOE at Eagle thanks to the "prepare for arrival" PA.

You guys hooked me up a couple weeks ago. I stood in line one early morning in MCI for awhile waiting to ask the agent to list me. I finally got to the front of the line and she said "sorry I'm alone I won't have time to list you." I asked her if she would like to list me after boarding everyone and she said. "No I don't have time."

So I stood in the window (feeling awkward) right under a bright light so the crew could see me. They did and the captain waived--I waived back. He took the hint and came up and rescued me... Told the gate agent that she had plenty of time to list me and to please just do it. As I was boarding she said "well the delay will be on the crew" and let me get on. We pushed 5 early. Awesome crew on that Widget 320 (with 60 open seats BTW).

Some gate agents really don't like pilots. It's just one of the challenges of commuting.

In three years of commuting I have run into this several times too. The gate agent is either too busy and craby to help or they are new and just don't have a clue. I can think of several times when the crew stepped in and got me on. In one case the crew, saved me from a uncomfortable night in the LAX crew lounge or the Hacienda. Another got me home for Christmas. I figure it's a karma thing and I'll be happy to take a delay bullet for a brother and get someone on because I've been on the other side too.

"Leave no pilot behind!" Great words to live by.
